Distinguishing Features of the Class

Architects perform architectural work involving a wide range of professional activities in the construction of new buildings / structures, reconstruction and repairs to existing buildings / structures. Duties include but are not limited to field investigation, design review with clients, cost estimating, selection of materials, preparation of drawings and specifications for bidding, and construction oversight. Work is performed in accordance with applicable state codes and federal regulations. Direct supervision is received from a higher-ranking administrator, however, the incumbent exercises professional judgment in the execution of responsibilities. Supervision may be exercised over personnel assigned.

Examples of work (Illustration Only)

• Inspects various buildings and structures general status and / or for needed work, code and hazard compliance and submits detail reports on same;
• Confers with outside firms / clients to determine needed repairs / alterations of public buildings / structures including schools, fire and police stations, public housing structures, etc.;
• Prepares schematic drawings and reports and construction estimates, and submits for review and approval;
• Reviews architectural design work from outside firms for design conformance with contract requirements, codes and standards, costs, accuracy, etc., as required;
• Reviews submittals on various projects for conformance with specifications;
• Inspects work performed by outside contractors to determine conformance with approved plans and specifications;
• Oversees job meetings and prepares reports on same;
• Prepares and maintains required records;
• Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Promotional,

Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Senior Drafting Technician for one year.

Possession of a current NYS Driver's License that must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment.
