Job Summary

The Lead, Insurance Tax is a technical position within the Tax Department with primary tax accounting and compliance responsibilities. This position is responsible for managing the preparation of and initial review of federal filings and audits for the insurance entities. This position is also responsible for leading the quarterly and annual reporting for insurance entities, directing other staff and is responsible for detailed review and execution of key controls.

This position will report to the Director, Tax. This role may manage an intern.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and / or review Statutory income tax accounting and reporting (current and deferred), and perform taxable income analysis for the management's review.
  • Collaborate with the Investment tax team to ensure all STAT / tax investment adjustments are accounted for and incorporated into provision workbooks.
  • Responsible for timely reporting of monthly, quarterly and annual tax requirements for Statutory reporting.
  • Lead the preparation of tax basis balance sheets for insurance companies in accordance with SSAP101.
  • Performs internal controls and assists in maintenance of evidence of controls.
  • Responsible for communicating with auditors and providing requested information as needed.
  • Responsible for managing preparation and review of federal income tax returns and estimates.
  • Review check requests and wire payments for federal and state payments.
  • Detail review of Life Entities' Federal Tax Return.
  • Performs tax research and makes recommendations based on analysis.
  • Assist with federal, state, and local taxing authority inquiries and audits.
  • Lead role with tax software automations and updates and maintenance as needed.
  • Responsible for identifying and implementing automation and modernization of tax processes that increases efficiency and reduces tax compliance and reporting cycle time. This position will play a key role in Finance Modernization enterprise initiatives.
  • Assist in or lead tax projects as needed.
  • Collaborate with strategy team to analyze of new transactions as needed.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required with preference in Accounting / Finance
  • Minimum 5 years experience in related field or combination of experience with a professional designation (CPA, CFA, CIA, CISA, etc.) considered.
  • Experience working in regulated environment.
  • Insurance industry experience preferred
  • Professional designation in related field preferred (CPA, CFA, CIA, CISA, etc.)
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of tax accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tax software systems.
  • Successful candidate must have good financial diagnosis and analytical skills and function well in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly intermediate to advance proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Driven, team-oriented individual interested working in high performance culture.
  • Process improvement mindset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills and courage to challenge existing processes.
  • Strong Analytical and Intuitive skills
