Join to apply for the Sr. Refrigeration Engineer role at Gray AES . The position is based in one of our offices located in Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; Cincinnati, OH; Charlotte, NC; Dallas, TX; Lexington, KY; Louisville, KY or Remote.
Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to mechanical and refrigeration system design for assigned projects, ensuring alignment with client requirements and code standards.
- Oversee the staff assigned to the project as well as the work performed by the assigned staff.
- Develop and document design strategies for refrigeration systems, including pressurization, filtration, humidity control, and temperature regulation.
- Perform system evaluations for condition, capacity, and efficiency, and recommend improvements or upgrades.
- Generate design layouts, equipment sizing, and system schematics for ammonia, CO2, synthetic, and secondary refrigeration systems.
- Conduct load calculations and assist in selecting appropriate systems and equipment to meet project specifications.
- Prepare design criteria and bid packages for subcontractor pricing and procurement.
- Use Revit, AutoCAD, and BIM tools to produce accurate and coordinated design documentation.
- Support construction administration activities, including reviewing shop drawings, responding to RFIs, and conducting site visits.
- Participate in client meetings and contribute to technical discussions and solution development.
- Assist in updating engineering design standards and mentoring junior engineers.
- Maintain active involvement in industry organizations such as IIAR, RETA, and ASHRAE to stay current with best practices and emerging technologies.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related disciplineProfessional Engineering License is required10–12 years of experience in mechanical and refrigeration system design, with a focus on industrial applications such as food & beverage processing and cold storage facilitiesSolid working knowledge of refrigeration systems, including ammonia, CO2, and synthetic refrigerants, as well as secondary systems like chilled water, glycol, and brineProficient in AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM workflows, with experience in drafting, modeling, and coordinating design documentationStrong understanding of building codes and industry standards, including IMC, IIAR, ASHRAE, and NFPADemonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines, including mechanical, structural, electrical, architectural, and HVAC teamsSkilled in load calculations, equipment selection, and system optimization, with a focus on code compliance and operational efficiencyExcellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to contribute to client meetings and technical presentationsSelf-motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to professional growth and team collaborationPhysical Demands & Work Environment
