Job Summary and Scope of Responsibility

The Sr. Project Engineer is responsible for applying strong mechanical engineering knowledge to support new product development (NPD) in a full lifecycle product development process including design, prototyping, manufacturing, and product launch.

This role will be heavily involved in mechanical designs for NPD projects and has the technical ability to apply new technology to build new innovative concepts. Additionally, the Sr. Project Engineer will maintain engineering quality by mentoring interns and apprentices and peer reviewing designs.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Plan, conceptualize, and create mechanical designs for new products with an interest or experience in fluid dynamics. Creative mechanism design is a core requirement.
  • Develop mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies and products using SolidWorks modeling techniques including sheet metal, castings, molded plastics, and machined parts using existing and new technologies
  • Lead failure analysis and problem-solving efforts through functional and reliability bench and laboratory testing
  • Perform stress / strain calculations and assembly tolerance studies to verify individual part safety factors and system functionality
  • Participate in DFMEA and 8D analysis to assure product quality
  • Act as a technical reviewer in the peer review process for product design
  • Contribute to project cost estimation by leveraging product knowledge and sourcing quotes
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, suppliers, contractors, production staff, and product managers to identify needs and translate them into products or processes that meet safety, performance, durability, and cost requirements
  • Document project development and design processes
  • Ensure adherence to project timelines and budgets
  • Generate prototypes for beta testing and customer demonstrations
  • Enter bill of materials into ERP systems and release using Engineering Change Notices
  • Stay current with professional and technical knowledge through workshops, publications, networking, and society participation

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or a closely related field
  • 7–10 years of related engineering experience or Master of Science Degree and 3–5 years of related experience
  • Team-first mindset with alignment to company values and behaviors
  • Ability to lead engineering teams in developing electromechanical products
  • Ability to travel up to 15%
  • Clear and effective communication abilities
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification is a plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Project)
  • Experience with SOLIDWORKS software required, experience with 3DEXPERIENCE a plus
  • Familiarity with FEA software and methodology is a plus
  • ERP software experience
  • Knowledge of product safety standards
  • Experience with tools, fixtures, software development, and data acquisition devices is a plus
  • Use of basic machine tools (i.e. lathe, drill press, mill, 3D printer)
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects
