Federal Work-Study (FWS) student assistant program description : FWS is a federal student aid program that provides part-time employment to students with significant financial need. The federal government pays a portion of the salary and the school pays the remainder. FWS is part of the total financial aid package and is not intended to be the sole source of assistance. The program aims to balance the interests of the student and the department, and positions may relate to career objectives or offer skill development.

OCC administers the Student Employment Program , including opportunities in General-Student Assistant, Federal Work-Study Student Assistant, and CalWORKs Work-Study Student Assistant roles. Non-academic, non-classified student assistants are at-will employees and not benefits eligible.

Responsibilities and Opportunities

Representative duties are defined by the appropriate Division / Department and may include on-the-job training. Job levels include :

  • Student Assistant I — entry level, supervised, routine duties; may involve standard tasks and basic use of software / tools.
  • Student Assistant II — intermediate / advanced, general supervision with on-the-job training; may involve access to data systems and confidential information; requires at least one year of experience in the same assignment.
  • Student Assistant III — specialist / lead, broader responsibilities, independent judgment, may direct lower-level staff; requires at least two years of experience in the same assignment.

Other duties cover a range from unskilled to skilled tasks, with assignments aligned to department needs and student schedules. Specific duties vary by assignment.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Education and Experience :

  • Student Assistant I : Little or no prior experience or education required
  • Student Assistant II : Some prior knowledge, experience, or education required
  • Student Assistant III : Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required
  • Skills and Competencies :

  • Skills required to perform job assignments
  • Ability to balance work and studies; limited independent judgment may be required depending on level and assignment
  • Eligibility :

  • Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester and have been awarded federal work-study to be eligible
  • D.E.I.A – demonstrated responsiveness to diversity and inclusion within the student population

    Conditions of Employment

    Non-academic, non-classified Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. The Education Code prohibits displacement of classified personnel; Student Assistants are at-will employees with no entitlement to any position or benefits. Employment details include work-hour limits, prohibitions on dual District employment in the same Fiscal Year, and terms related to federal work-study verification, class schedules, and eligibility.

  • Hours : Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 hours / week in fall / spring; up to 28 hours / week outside fall / spring.
  • Compliance : Not employed in another District capacity during the same Fiscal Year (July 1 – June 30).
  • Employment is contingent on verification of federal work-study award, schedule, background checks, U.S. work eligibility, and Board approval. No fringe benefits are provided. Hours and start date are arranged with the supervisor.
