Position Summary
Process development role focused on the composite fabrication of hulls, decks, superstructures, and smaller composites required for the construction of yachts. The primary focus of this role is the development of new, and continuous improvement of existing, processes required to meet the operational goals of the organization. Responsible for laminate design and structural analysis of assigned composite materials.
Job Responsibilities
- Support Composite Production transition from open molding to closed molding processes.
- Benchmarking current composite processes to achieve project goals that support overall business objectives including safety, productivity, schedule attainment, and cost.
- Development of closed molding composite processes aimed at the following objectives :
Light weighting
Maximizing mechanical propertiesReduced laborImproved repeatabilitySafetyCreate engineering standards and conduct trials to validate new tooling needed to support manufacturing processes and product features for new product development.Support Engineering Department with the design / development of new composite parts and assemblies, meeting expectations for manufacturability, quality, cost, and feasibility.Perform calculations and failure analysis, including FEA, to validate composite designs.Investigate / evaluate new materials required to support process development.Conduct scaled trials to evaluate potential materials and processes.Collaborate with new product development to implement solutions into new boats.Conduct plant trials and implement new technology / improvements into operations.Develop prototype tooling required to support the development of new composite manufacturing processes.Develop and meet project goals and timelines.Other tasks and duties as assigned.Education And Experience
Pursuing BS, or higher, degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or relevant branch, from an ABET accredited collegeKnowledge of composite materials and processesExperience with Out of Autoclave (OOA) closed molding processes typical to marine, wind, and mass transit industryAdvanced computer skills and experience with SolidWorks Design & Analysis softwareMechanical testing of materials using Instron, or similar test equipmentThermal analysis of polymeric materials (resin, gel, adhesives, foam, coatings, etc.)Strong problem-solving skillsHands-on approachStrong communication and project management skillsGeneral Job Requirements
