Open Rank Professor of Philosophy

Overview

The Department of Philosophy at Stanford University seeks applicants for an Open Rank Professor position in philosophy. The appointment may be at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track), Associate Professor (with tenure), or Full Professor. All areas in philosophy will be considered. The successful candidate will lead robust research and graduate training programs, teach and mentor students at graduate and undergraduate levels, and maintain a world-class research program. The term of appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2026.

Applicants should apply through Stanford Faculty Positions and submit : a cover letter; a curriculum vitae (including a publication list); a research statement of no more than three single-spaced pages; a teaching statement of no more than one single-spaced page; for Associate and Full Professor, two most important papers or one most important book; for Assistant Professor, one or two scholarly publications and / or well-developed papers. Candidates will be asked to provide the names of three references (see below).

The salary range for AY 2025-2026 is : Assistant Professor : $111,240 – $130,810; Associate Professor : $124,630 – $154,500; Professor : $144,200 – $247,200. Stanford provides a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The final offer will be determined based on qualifications, budget availability, and internal equity.
