Description :
Surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures.
They ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
Surgical technologists are experts in the principles of asepsis and sterile technique.
They combine knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, tools, and technologies to assist in invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
He / she understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
He / she is responsible for ensuring quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining the sterile field.
Essential Functions :
Prepare and anticipate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for usage during the procedure.
Set up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the procedure.
Perform instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator.
Participate in procedure final verification and during the briefing process.
Assist with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure.
Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
Prepare and pass off specimens as appropriate.
Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization when assigned.
Assist other team members with cleaning the operating room to facilitate turnovers.
Participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
Assist in developing a proper learning environment for the orientation and education of personnel and students.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
Required : High School Diploma
Preferred : Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
Required : Prior training meeting the knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform the role.
Preferred : Membership to the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).
1 year of relevant experience preferred for all roles.
Preferred : Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) - NBSTSA National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
BLS Instructor certification preferred.
Physical Demands :
Physical requirements include carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, and walking frequently.
Occasional requirements include sitting, reaching, and trunk rotation.
Seldom requires bending, squatting, or stair climbing.
Forceful grip or pinch may be required occasionally.
Visual acuity and color vision may be assessed.
