Must-Have :

  • Level 1 trauma experience
  • Previous travel experience (no first-time travelers)
  • Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit
  • Heparin drip titration experience

Description :

This position is for a Registered Nurse in the Neuro Med-Surg Acute specialty.

The unit has 54 beds with a combination of semi-private rooms.

The nurse-patient ratio during the day shift is 1 : 4-5 and at night is 1 : 5-6.

Common patient diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience-related conditions, along with some medical overflow patients.

RNs are required to titrate drips, including heparin titrated based on PTT.

There is a charge nurse available 24 / 7, who does not take an assignment unless the unit is short-staffed.

A house supervisor is also present around the clock.

Patient care technicians are available, with a ratio of 1 : 9-10 during the day and evening shifts, and 1 : 10-12 at night.

The unit typically handles high flow oxygen for stable patients only, but the incidence of COVID-19 cases is low.

Telemetry monitoring is managed on a house-wide basis, and RNs are not required to interpret their own strips.

Nurses will work three 12-hour shifts each week, with weekend requirements rotating every other weekend.

Holiday shifts will also be required on a rotating basis.

There is no call or standby requirement, but staff may need to float to general units as necessary.

Uniforms are not required to follow a specific color code, but tattoos must be covered during duty hours, and only ear piercings are allowed.

Orientation includes two days of training with a preceptor to prepare nurses for patient care.
