The Facilities Maintenance Technician at the International African American Museum plays a critical role in ensuring the museum's physical environment is safe, functional, and welcoming for all visitors and staff. This position involves performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs across a variety of building systems including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and structural components. The technician will proactively identify potential issues and implement preventative measures to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency. Collaboration with museum management and external contractors is essential to coordinate larger repair projects and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Ultimately, this role supports the museum’s mission by maintaining an environment that enhances the visitor experience and preserves the integrity of the facility.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in facilities maintenance, including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Basic knowledge of building systems and safety regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Certification in HVAC, electrical, or plumbing trades, not required
  • Experience working in a museum, cultural institution, or similar environment, not required
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), not required
  • Training in OSHA safety standards and procedures, not required
  • Ability to operate specialized maintenance equipment and tools, not required.
  • Responsibilities :

  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repairs to minimize disruption to museum operations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks such as lubricating machinery, replacing filters, and testing safety systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Collaborate with museum staff and external vendors to schedule and oversee specialized repair work and facility upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety codes, regulations, and museum policies related to facility operations.
  • Assist in setting up and dismantling equipment for special events and exhibitions as needed.

    The Facilities Maintenance Technician utilizes a broad range of technical skills daily to maintain and repair complex building systems, ensuring the museum operates smoothly and safely.
