Investigative Support Specialist

Compensation Details : Full Pay Range 27.96 - 40.58 Generally, the hiring range is from the minimum up to 80% of the range. This is a full-time hourly position.

Job Description Summary

Investigative, clerical, and research work in support of criminal prosecutions and investigations. This is a non-commissioned position.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide telephone and in person customer service.
  • Collects witness statements and corroborative evidence / documentation.
  • Communicates with the victims of crimes concerning information regarding their case.
  • Performs initial investigative background on incoming cases.
  • Performs case preparation and ongoing case support to the assigned investigative unit or Detective.
  • Utilizes investigative data sources to obtain criminal histories, identity information, photographs, outside agency reports, and other supporting information.
  • Assists with the collection of evidence and crime scene processing.
  • Processes paperwork and performs filing functions as needed.
  • Writes reports in a Police Records Management System to document investigative activity.
  • Authors warrant affidavits and court orders.
  • Provides credible testimony in judicial and administrative proceedings.
  • Assists Crime Analysts and other parts of the Department as needed.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, other materials and equipment. Use all required safety equipment.
  • Interacts with criminal offenders and potentially disturbing information related to criminal investigations.
  • Using the appropriate software, organizes and disseminates tips in various, ongoing investigations.
  • May be assigned the lead role for various department programs such as Crime Stoppers or Safe to Tell.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to use police computer systems, i.e, computer aided dispatch, records management, NCIC / CCIC.
  • Ability to become certified to use National and State Computer Crime Computer System within 90 days of appointment to this position.
  • Ability to use MS Office Suite, including word processing and spreadsheet development.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written reports.
  • Ability to be flexible in day-to-day job assignments.
  • Ability to understand the diverse needs of internal and external customers and to successfully meet those needs.
  • Ability to render credible testimony in judicial and administrative proceedings.
  • Ability to be comfortable interacting criminal offenders and potentially disturbing information related to criminal investigations.
  • Knowledge of Colorado Revised Statutes.
  • Skills in excellent customer service.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License and ability to maintain acceptable driving history.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate bilingually in English / Spanish.
  • Knowledge of the Boulder area and community.
  • Experience with accounting or financial crimes investigation or experience with domestic violence, child abuse or sexual assault investigations.
  • Three to five (3-5) years or more of criminal investigative experience or crime analysis experience.
  • Experience writing police reports, various types of warrants and court orders.
  • Experience using CCIC / NCIC, and other criminal justice related databases.
  • Prior certification as a Police Officer or crime analyst in the State of Colorado.
  • Ability to communicate bilingually in English / Spanish.
  • Knowledge of the Boulder area and community.
  • Required Education and Experience

  • Associates degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent college. Four (4) years of experience may substitute for the education requirement.
  • Zero to two (0-2) years work experience in an equivalent or related law enforcement setting.
  • Background Information

    Demonstrated personal and professional honesty, integrity, good judgment as shown in applicant's criminal history, background and motor vehicle record, and use of drugs and alcohol. Preference may be given to applicants who have no history of use, sale, or possession of illegal substances.

    Working Conditions and Requirements

  • Physical and mental effort : Sitting for long periods of time with occasional walking and responding to crime scenes. Ability to lift 20 pounds and drive city vehicles. Must be detail oriented and flexible with rapidly changing assignments based upon calls for service.
  • Work environment : Works primarily in office setting, but will be responsible for responding outside the office to various locations including crime scenes.
  • Machines and equipment used : Frequently uses standard office equipment including city vehicle, personal computers, copy / fax machines, telephone, calculator, cell phones and pagers.
