We’re seeking a Global Head of Real Estate and Facilities to lead the planning, operations, and optimization of Morningstar’s worldwide office portfolio. This role oversees facilities across 30+ global locations and is responsible for delivering a consistent, high-quality workplace experience that aligns with our brand and business goals.
The Global Head of Real Estate and Facilities is responsible for the strategic and operational management of Morningstar’s worldwide physical infrastructure, including overseeing our office facility portfolio, managing construction and expansion projects, ensuring efficient daily operations, handling budgets, and building teams to support our business growth. You'll be responsible for the strategic management of a company's entire physical property portfolio, including offices and other facilities. This top-level role involves optimizing property operations, ensuring cost-effectiveness and compliance, and aligning real estate strategy with overall business goals through activities like site selection, lease management, and financial analysis. You'll partner with our award-winning workplace design team to provide productive and beautiful spaces. You'll use your strong planning and financial skills to refine our portfolio of office spaces, informed by our workforce planning team.
This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is based in our Chicago headquarters, with up to 20% international travel to key locations for expansion or consolidation projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Planning : Develop and implement long-term real estate strategies to support the company's operational needs and growth. Partner with the workforce planning team to match the company's growth patterns.
- Property Portfolio Management : Oversee the company's properties, including offices, data centers, and retail spaces, to ensure they are efficient and cost-effective.
- Lease Management : Negotiate leases and manage relationships with landlords and external partners.
- Market Evaluation : Conduct market research and analysis to identify opportunities and inform real estate decisions.
- Construction & Capital Projects : Manage the construction and build-out of new facilities, expansions, and capital improvements across multiple locations.
- Financial Management : Develop and manage budgets for facilities operations and leases, ensuring cost-effectiveness, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and tracking financial compliance.
- Service Delivery & Vendor Management : Ensure consistent service delivery for all facility-related services (e.g., HVAC, fire / life safety, food and beverage) by managing vendor performance and service level agreements across multiple geographies. Oversee the negotiation, execution and plan renewals of vendor contracts.
- Reporting : Report monthly performance metrics and strategic updates to senior leadership, ensuring alignment with enterprise and budget goals.
- Compliance & Regulations : Ensure all facilities and operations adhere to safety, sanitization, sustainability and regulatory standards; oversee emergency response protocols and risk assessments. Lead sustainability efforts including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and carbon footprint tracking.
- Team Leadership : Lead, mentor, and develop global teams of facilities managers and other support staff to promote operational excellence and accountability.
- Stakeholder Collaboration : Partner with internal teams (Senior Leadership, Finance, IT, People & Culture, Design) and external partners (vendors, industry experts) to align facilities strategy with broader business goals.
Qualifications
Experience : 10+ years of experience in global facilities and real estate management, preferably in a corporate or financial services environment.Leadership Skills : Proven leadership, mentorship, and team development abilities across multicultural and geographically dispersed teams.Strategic Thinking : Ability to translate business needs into strategic plans and execute complex projects.Financial Acumen : Strong financial management skills for budget development and execution. Excellent negotiation and contracting skills. Must be able to understand the unique needs of each location and demonstrate strong skills in negotiating large and complex lease agreements.Interpersonal Skills : Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills to work with diverse teams and senior leadership.Technology : Experience with workplace technology platforms and sustainability reporting tools.Education : Bachelor's degree required; additional education or certifications such as CFI, MCR or CBCP are a plus.At Morningstar, we believe the workplace is more than just a location—it’s a living ecosystem that fuels creativity, connection, and purpose.
