Mechanism Ventures (Mechanism)  is an early-stage venture firm that partners with entrepreneurs to launch and scale ambitious companies. In 2019, we started building profitable startups from scratch. We brought together top engineering minds from places like Princeton and MIT to drive the highest success rate in the industry and turn company building into a science.

Position Description

We are hiring a Full-time Temporary Senior Accountant who will work with our Finance Team to support Mechanism Ventures and  Portfolio Companies.

Mechanism is in the initial phases of a  substantial transformation away from its traditional “accounting firm” model within Finance. You will play a crucial role working initially in the current environment but also supporting initiatives that move the team quickly and efficiently toward our new model. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in identifying, developing and implementing processes along the way.

You’ll be reporting to the Controller but will be working with the entire Finance Team in a highly collaborative environment.

Why This Role Matters

Mechanism Finance is shifting from a high-touch services function into a platform. Our goal is to eliminate recurring dependencies, enable CEOs to be financially fluent and independent, and build automation / playbooks that scale across ventures.

This role exists not just to “review books”, but to engineer repeatable financial infrastructure, ensure rigor and transparency, and reinforce our culture of Alpha.

Key Responsibilities

System Review & Integrity

  • Own review of company financials, not as a gatekeeper, but as an auditor of system reliability.
  • Ensure accounting outputs tie to operational drivers (inventory, revenue cohorts, utilization, etc.).
  • Build confidence that reporting and financials show the truth, and surprises don’t happen.

Compounding Infrastructure

  • Turn every recurring deliverable (closes, reconciliations, reports) into a playbook, template, or automation that reduces future touch.
  • Partner with tech to reduce manual work and accelerate adoption of self-serve finance.
  • Portfolio Enablement

  • Train and mentor portfolio accountants / ops staff through a structured program.
  • Support CEO onboarding with tools to manage their business.
  • Drive independence, where each company is on track to run its own accounting within 12-18 months.
  • System Leverage

  • Identify areas where friction exists in finance workflows and redesign them to leverage these points.
  • Compound insights across companies : what you fix once should improve the entire system.
  • Ensure reviews and outputs increase velocity, clarity, and confidence in decision-making.
  • Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • CPA or equivalent rigour, but your value is in judgment, not journal entries. (Although you’ll be involved in those as well, until you can figure out how to automate those away).
  • Track record of building financial systems, automations, or scalable playbooks (vs. just producing numbers).
  • Excellent written and oral English communication.
  • At least 6 years of related experience that includes tenure with dynamic, fast-paced, US-based companies and public practice at a top-tier accounting firm.
  • Ability to simplify complex concepts and foster an environment of rapid execution, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Comfort in low-context, high-velocity environments with portfolio complexity.
  • Builder mindset, resourceful, curious, and relentless about turning one-off tasks into compounding assets.
  • Strong FP&A and accounting fluency, where you can tie GAAP outputs to operational realities and decision-making.
  • Confidence in working on a team that is highly collaborative and hyper-communicative.
  • Success in This Role

  • Monthly closes run smoothly with minimal intervention.
  • CEOs and TTLs understand and own their numbers.
  • Finance becomes a platform, delivering leverage, not dependency.
  • Every review leaves behind a system that compounds portfolio-wide.

    Location and Time Commitment

    We are fully remote - you can work wherever you’re most productive. This role is full-time and will need to overlap with US ET for the majority of the workday. It is an exciting opportunity that demands a level of dedication beyond the standard 9 to 5. We need someone who goes above and beyond to make a real impact.

    Professional work environment required which includes home computer with dual monitors and strong, reliable internet connectivity.

    Compensation

    TBD - This will vary based on location as we will accept applications from non-US based candidates.
