This role is for a Test Technician in the Safety Laboratories Department, responsible for conducting testing for the Safety Innovation Laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Complete test related duties as assigned during daily scheduling meetings and execute work independently with quality and efficiency.
  • Ability to run tests independently on various SIL test facilities.
  • Operate test stands including Servo Sled, Seattle Sled, Bendix, Monterey, Tinius Olsen, Seat Integrity (FMVSS 202A), IHI, OOP, VIA Sled, Environmental Chamber, Pedestrian Protection, Roof / Door Strength and Seat Anchorage test facilities.
  • Receive cases with "kitted" parts and prepare kits for first run and subsequent runs according to test matrices.
  • Conduct sample prep, fixturing, installation / removal, camera setup, test matrix setup, test execution, data collection and data review.

What You'll Do

  • Design, fabricate, modify, and mount customized test fixtures.
  • Run standard tests independently and support test engineers for unique one-off testing.
  • Interpret, set-up, and run newly developing procedures in support of new programs.
  • Safely handle, install, and deploy airbags, air curtains, pyro-seatbelts, and other pyro-technic devices.
  • Review initial test results / data to ensure quality test events.
  • Install and position ATD's to the required specifications in support of all various test modes.
  • Set-up instrumentation including multi-axis load cells, accelerometers, and displacement transducers.
  • Prepare and run Kistler high-speed data acquisition systems.
  • Assist with maintenance and troubleshooting of operational tools including instrumentation, cabling, control equipment, and test stands.
  • Manage parts flow to and from all SIL test facilities per established guidelines.
  • Collaborate with requesting engineers to resolve discrepancies in test matrices.
  • Follow all SOPs and EH&S requirements.
  • Maintain all work area documentation including note logs, check sheets, and sample inventory.
  • Maintain specific lab supplies.
  • Identify and implement new tools, methods, or processes to improve quality, efficiency, and timing.
  • Provide feedback and participate in process improvement or facility project teams.
  • Participate in training of new employees and guide less experienced staff to understand standard procedures.
  • Meet workplace health and safety requirements and practices and provide feedback to improve conditions.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction and data quality; cross-train and re-assign to other Safety Laboratories Department sites / operations as needed.
  • Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in FMVSS safety related testing
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in vehicle, lab, or bench instrumentation
  • Capable of independent operation on the Servo Sled, Seattle Sled, Bendix, Monterey, Tinius Olsen, Seat Integrity (FMVSS 202A), IHI, OOP, VIA Sled, Environmental Chamber, Roof / Door Strength and Seat Anchorage test facilities
  • Self-starter, highly motivated, strong team player with a positive attitude
  • Nice to have

  • Familiarity with ATD's and instrumentation including multi-axis load cells, accelerometers, and displacement transducers
  • Five (5) or more years of experience with Kistler high-speed data acquisition systems
  • Proficient with PC based systems such as SPRITE / SPROUT, Crash Designer, Trace Cam, and TEMA camera control
  • Knowledge of vehicle systems and fabrication experience
  • General machine shop and hand tool skills
  • Availability to work afternoon shift and overtime

  • This position is hybrid. Candidates who are in commuting distance to a Ford hub location may be required to be onsite four or more days per week.

    This position is a salary grade 4.
