Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Carry out a treatment program for assigned patients as directed by the Occupational Therapist. Under supervision, administer modalities and interventions such as exercise, massage, fluid therapy, hot packs, ultrasound, paraffin, cryotherapy, etc.
  • Observe patients during treatments and compile and evaluate data on patients' responses to treatments and progress and report orally or in writing to the Occupational Therapist.
  • Fit patients for, adjust, and train patients in the use and care of pre-fabricated orthopedic braces, prostheses, and supportive devices.
  • Fabricate custom orthotic devices for patients and train them in the use of such devices.
  • Confer with members of the Occupational Therapy staff and other health team members, individually and in conference, to exchange, discuss, and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying, and coordinating treatment programs. Coordinate with other departments and the clinic staff to provide complete care to patients in an inter-disciplinary manner.
  • Provide required services within the rules and regulations of the Texas State board of Occupational Therapy.
  • Perform all duties in such a manner that they meet all Joint Commission (JC) standards.
  • Educate patients, families or healthcare professionals in the rationale and techniques for the prescribed Occupational Therapy treatment program.
  • Assist in conducting in-service educational programs for peers, subordinates, other healthcare providers and members of the military and civilian communities.
  • Carry out treatment plans designed by the military or civilian Occupational Therapist to include manual therapy techniques, education, training and evaluation.
  • Possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision in an acute care setting. Recognize the requirement when an OTR level re-evaluation is necessary, and notify the Occupational Therapist supervisor of the situation.
  • Have knowledge of behavioral diagnoses and associated interventions. Have knowledge of neurological deficits and impairments and associated interventions. Have knowledge of orthopedic injuries and associated interventions.
  • Establish and maintain full competency with the treatment procedures and exercise programs utilized in the section of assignment.
  • Interact effectively with patients and healthcare professionals to improve the quality of healthcare. This includes consultation with the Occupational Therapist when patient(s) fail to respond or demonstrate adverse reactions to the treatment plan.
  • Will prepare any additional records or description of care if and when required, on the behalf of the MTF, the medical Command, the Military Health System, the Department of the Army, the Department of Defense. Ensure that all treatments are clearly documented in patient records.
  • Complete and finalize assigned opening / closing clinical task according to established procedures. These may include but are not limited to end of the day close out in appointment systems, patient data collection, maintaining supplies, equipment, linen and performing infection control procedures.
  • The Occupational Therapy Assistant may be required to travel with patients on rehabilitation and community integration activities. Such trips will be conducted during the traditional duty day, with Government-owned and Government-operated vehicles.
  • Exercise professional judgment in administering treatment to the spectrum of Occupational Therapy patients with neurological, general medical, post- surgical and orthopedic disorders.
  • Provide professional guidance, counseling, and evaluation / assistance in directing activities and training of any assigned student.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    • Requirements :

  • Degree / Education : Associates Degree for Occupational Therapy Assistant. Graduate from a college or university accredited at the time of graduation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
  • Certifications in addition : to Basic Life Support (5.2.3) : Certified through the National Board of Certified Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • Experience : Minimum of one (1) years' experience as an Occupational Therapy Assistant after graduation. Experience in an acute care setting is preferable, but not required.
  • Work Environment : able to tolerate strong odors and disturbing sounds; ie, vomiting, diarrhea, and trach suction. Provide care to patients with infectious disease etiology.
  • Licensure / Registration : Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a occupational therapy assistant or possess current certification as an occupational therapy assistant / technician as determined by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
