We have a Commissioning Engineer position available in our Biddeford, ME office. This individual will be responsible for commissioning transmission and distribution substations additions or modifications are installed, function, and energized correctly. The role serves to prevent errors from impacting reliability and safety, ensuring that design, installation, and equipment issues are addressed before energization. The Senior Commissioning Engineer is expected to train new engineers / technicians in relay testing, equipment testing and substation commissioning.
Major Responsibilities
Review specifications and engineering drawings to understand the purpose and functionality of substations.Schedule installation and commissioning with subcontractors and customers.Provide safety analysis and proper equipment isolation procedures.Provide a day-to-day outage plan for customers.Develop detailed test procedures and sign-off sheets for each piece of equipment.Monitor construction and address technical questions during construction, installation and testing.Identify and resolve design errors.Assist field crews and dispatch in developing and sequencing switching, ensuring proper hold points for testing.Directly witness or perform critical tests such as DC functional trip testing prior to energization and in service.Direct crews during critical work junctures, typically around final commissioning and energization.Acknowledge substation modification is complete and functional and formally turn it over to Dispatch to operate within design limits.Support several capital projects concurrently; rotate among jobs, reviewing test results and providing technical support as needed.Near project completion, be prepared to work extended hours / days at a job site as equipment is ready for functional testing and energization.Develop and maintain strong working relationships with customers, and understand customer needs, timeframes, and financial constraints.Manage resources and services required to install electrical equipment.Demonstrate customer service, problem-solving, and the ability to handle difficult situations with customers.Assist in developing estimates for client proposals and further business development.Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Education
Bachelor degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical or engineering technology) is preferred. An Associate Degree is acceptable provided the candidate has proven field experience.
Experience
3+ years with capabilities in below areas is preferred :
In-depth understanding of :Three-phase power systemsProtection and control schemes and implementationEquipment testing - circuit breakers, transformers, circuit switchers, MOABs, CTs, PTs, batteries and chargers, transfer switches, line tuners, wave traps, carrier relays, etc.Experience in :Testing, troubleshooting, evaluating, and servicing electrical distribution and control systemsUtilizing relay secondary injection test setsPQ measurementsLeading crews to test and commission new and modified substationsRotating machinery, including generators and excitation systemsSCADA, RTU, and DFR systemsAutoCAD is also desiredTravel
Work will be mostly onsite at clients primarily in Maine and Northern Massachusetts.
Driver's License
Possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted driver's license.
Physical Demands of Position
Seeing, color perception, hearing, listening, clear speech, dexterity in hands, driving, lifting, climbing, ability to mount and dismount equipment, pushing and pulling, exposure to various temperatures, moisture, hazardous materials and electrical voltages.
Working Environment
On-site environment could include various temperature conditions; moisture, slippery or uneven surfaces, confined spaces, heights; frequent standing, driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and occasional bending, squatting, climbing, twisting, balancing, and reaching; exposure to noise, vibrations and chemicals. Irregular or extended hours may be required, including on-call travel for project completion.
