Motor Equipment Operator II
This Motor Equipment Operator II is part of the Public Service Division Sidewalk Crew performing responsible semi-skilled work in the regular operation of specialized automotive equipment to assist with concrete installation, maintenance, repair, and other related infrastructure work. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor II. The anticipated work schedule for this position is as follows (subject to change due to operational needs) : Tuesday - Friday : 6 : 30 AM - 5 : 00 PM. As of March 28, 2024, this position is part of the Labor and Trades bargaining unit, as defined by the City's Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity.
The hiring amount for this position is between $23.42 - $28.78 an hour ($48,713.60 - $59,862.40 Annually), in accordance with the Labor and Trades Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) effective July 1, 2025. This pay rate will apply to individuals hired into this position on or after July 1, 2025. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Operates a front-end loader. Operates a back-hoe, trencher and related equipment in the maintenance and construction of roads, water / wastewater, stormwater, or sewer lines; Operates large tractors, tractors with hydraulic arm mowers and / or bush hog, or other applicable equipment. Operates one or more of the following depending on assignment : bucket truck, chipper, large mowing equipment in the maintenance of grounds, and / or operates snow equipment and removal of storm debris during inclement weather. Operates televising and sewer cleaning equipment, depending on assignment. Services, maintains, and makes minor repairs to equipment. Operates multi-purpose equipment in laying storm drains, depending on assignment. Operates a heavy roller, if applicable. Operates heavy sweepers in cleaning roads and streets, depending on assignment. Operates light equipment, medium, and heavy equipment. Periodically performs semi-skilled manual tasks in connection with the equipment operated, if applicable. As a trainee, also operates heavy equipment. Performs related tasks as required.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications : Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of 2 years of direct work experience in the field. Must have experience in the operation of motorized equipment. Must have valid VA driver's license by employment start date and have the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire. Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical. Skills : General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing trucks and related medium construction equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; dependability.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information
Positions in Public Works Departments are subject to mandatory emergency and stand by call and with minimum response time requirements. Position is subject to federal DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations. Physical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor : Heavy work. Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and / or up to 50 lbs. frequently and / or up to 20 lbs. constantly to move objects.
