Mechanic I / II

Overview

The City of Coronado is accepting applications for the positions of Mechanic I and Mechanic II. Mechanic I salary : $5,151.55 - $6,903.57 Monthly. Mechanic II salary : $5,720.84 - $7,666.48 Monthly.

Responsibilities

The Department of Public Services and Engineering is responsible for maintaining the City's physical infrastructure and maintenance for beaches, facilities, parks, sanitary sewer and storm drain systems, rights of way, and protecting public health and safety. The department provides engineering management, including planning, design, construction, and repair of the City's buildings, parks, streets, and utility systems, and manages a wide range of services and programs.

• Perform routine fluid checks on vehicles and equipment including oil, transmission, brake, and related fluid levels; replace as required.
• Assist in diagnosing, repairing, and adjusting a variety of systems on light and heavy equipment and vehicles including computer control systems, fuel injection systems, antilock brake systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, fuel management systems, transmissions, steering and suspension components, clutches and engine sensors.
• Inspect motorized and mechanical equipment; diagnose problems and determine extent of necessary repairs; perform routine preventive maintenance; test and repair starters and recharge batteries.
• Assist in the overhaul and repair of engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, distributors, and pumps; fit and adjust bearings; install axles and wheels.
• Test and repair starters and alternators; recharge batteries.
• Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
• Tune-up engines by replacing ignition parts; recondition and adjust carburetors, fuel injection systems, and propane fuel systems; repair and maintain emission control systems.
• Repair, adjust, and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, masters cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes.
• Inspect, test, and replace tires as required.
• Conduct parts inventory; maintain records of vehicles and supplies.
• Operate and repair shop equipment; clean and maintain assigned work area; dispose of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
• Assist other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Mechanic I

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :

Experience :

At least one (1) year of automotive maintenance and repair experience is desirable.

Education / Training :

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in automotive maintenance and repair or a related field.

Licenses and Certificates :

Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsement and a safe driving record within six (6) months of appointment is required. Employees hired after September 30, 2022, shall be required to possess a Class A License or obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment.

Mechanic II

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :

At least two (2) years of increasingly responsible automotive and equipment maintenance and repair experience

Education :

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in automotive maintenance and repair or a related field.

Examination & Selection Process

Application Review :

A completed City of Coronado employment application and required certifications must be received by the Human Resources Division. Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience. The first application review deadline is scheduled for November 29.

Examination Process :

Applicants considered most qualified after the application review process will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview (100%). Additionally, applicants may be requested to undertake any or all of the following exercises – written assessment, practical, or presentation - as part of the evaluation process.

Department Interviews :

The top candidates will be invited to participate in a department interview with the Public Services Supervisor and other department personnel.

Candidate Selection :

The selected candidate will be issued a conditional offer, subject to the successful completion of a background check, FMCSA query for Driver's Drug and Alcohol Testing History in any DOT-regulated positions, and a medical examination including a DOT drug screen.

All candidates who successfully obtain a 70% or above in each phase of the exam process will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of at least six months.
