Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Editor-in-Chief in creating layout and determining content for The Catholic Virginian
- Oversee writers and photographers in various assignments
- Develop story ideas; assign stories and deadlines
- Copy-edit all articles for content, spelling, grammar, and accuracy
- Proof the entire newspaper before publication
- Write stories, conduct interviews, and take photos as needed
- Assist the Editor-in-Chief in creating social media platforms for The Catholic Virginian and developing social media strategy
- Manage and assist in maintaining timely content for the print / digital Catholic Virginian and social media platforms
- Evaluate material from OSV News, Catholic News Agency, and other sources for publication consideration
- Perform other duties as requested by the Bishop, Vicar General or Director of Communications
Qualifications
Education / Experience :
Bachelor’s degree in Communications / English / Journalism or related field requiredAt least ten years’ experience in broadcast / communications industry with at least five years in Catholic media and / or newspaper production preferredA practicing Catholic in good standing who supports Church teaching is requiredKnowledge / Skills :
Strong working knowledge of the structure and teachings of the Catholic ChurchStrong writing, copy-editing skillsHigh level of attention to detailKnowledge of newspaper production and layoutKnowledge of Associated Press StylebookAbility to analyze, interpret, and use sound news judgment to make content decisionsStrong organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task and meet deadlinesStrong interpersonal, leadership, and people management skillsExperience managing teams including dotted-line relationships preferredAbility to maintain confidentiality is requiredProficiency with various PC software, website-building, and social mediaProficiency in Adobe InDesign a plusAbility to speak / read / write Spanish fluently a plusPhotography / videography skills a plusWorking Conditions
The Managing Editor is a full-time position.Typical work hours are 8 : 30 a.m.-4 : 30 p.m. Monday-Friday.Occasional evening / weekend work and travel will be required.Production weeks may require longer hours as needed.How to Apply
