Real Estate Underwriter

The Mortgage Loan Underwriter underwrites loans in accordance with Company and Investor guidelines by following the company's policies and procedures under general supervision. Makes sound underwriting decisions and ensures that all decisions meet legal and policy requirements. Perform all duties in accordance with the company's policies and procedures, all US state and federal laws and regulations, wherein the company operates.

Major Duties and Essential Functions

  • Performs thorough analysis of conventional real estate loan products offered by the Credit Union.
  • Completes review of credit, income, asset and property to ensure the loan file meets guidelines and is within compliance.
  • Identifies risk factors within each loan and utilizes resources, tools, and documentation to detect red flags and clear inconsistencies.
  • Review appraisals to validate collateral value, marketability and equity position as well as ensure the appraisal meets the secondary market or product guidelines.
  • Maintain specialized knowledge of mortgage trends and developments to include but not limited to, internal changes, regulatory changes, insurance and secondary market changes.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations governing mortgage underwriting.
  • Document loan with detailed notes for seamless transition to processing and closing.
  • Communicate and respond to Operations staff in a timely manner regarding any deficiencies within loan files.
  • Manage file through the milestones to meet closing date.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position :

  • This position requires a thorough knowledge of residential mortgage underwriting, including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and private investor guidelines. Must have a working knowledge of mortgage loan types, terms and standard forms and documentation.
  • A strong understanding of mortgage lending compliance and working knowledge of mortgage products available in the marketplace with a strong knowledge of current mortgage underwriting guidelines and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills and decision-making ability to make lending decisions and translate guidelines.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast paced, high volume work environment.
  • Possess a complete working knowledge of mortgage loan underwriting concepts, techniques, terminology and regulatory guidelines.
  • Excellent analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Proficient computer skills to input and retrieve data in loan operation systems as well as Microsoft office products.
  • Must not be on an agency watch list or banned list to include but not limited to HUD, FNMA, FHMC or NCUA.
  • Encompass or similar LOS experience preferred
  • Education and Experience :

  • Accredited degree or some college coursework in Business administration, Finance, Real Estate, or other related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of real estate Underwriting experience or an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform essential functions.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from borrowers.
