- The Surgical Tech in the surgical unit is responsible for providing care for patients in a safe and efficient manner. Works cooperatively with all levels of staff employed within this facility in a professional manner at all times.
- Follow, support and enforce all policies set forth, complying with all standards, principles and procedures set forth in nursing procedure manuals.
- Supports staffing / scheduling policies to meet departmental requirements. Fosters the development and educational process of new employees, students and colleagues.
- Promotes the unit / department philosophy and goals. Complies with department educational requirements and participates in performance improvement activities.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding patients, families, healthcare professionals. Treats others with respect and dignity, recognizing individual uniqueness of patients and colleagues.
Primary Responsibilities During Operative and Pre-operative Procedures :
Utilize critical thinking skills and prioritize activities.Follow pertinent standards of care.Assist with placement of sterile drapes.Provide instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure;Maintain an organized sterile field.Ensuring sterility of the field and taking corrective action as needed.Prepare sterile dressings.Identify expected outcomes individualized to each patient. Initiates Pre-Op Education to patients in the clinic setting.Intervention :
This position requires attention to detail and accurate documentation of all situations.Will use a variety of medical equipment including but not limited to VS machine, glucometer, cardiac monitor, Bair Hugger, fluid warmer, EKG, IV pump, all surgical instrumentation, pumps and cautery, as well as fetal warmer. (This list although extensive may not include all instruments and equipment utilized for this position)Will meet standards of care for all patients following specific policies and procedures.Will develop and utilize surgical tech skills, prioritizing all activities.Will communicate with all levels of surgical staff, providers, auxiliary departments, patients and families to provide optimum patient care.Strive to establish a positive rapport with customers and coworkers. Providing professional courteous assistance as needed, expediting positive solutions.Assume responsibility and accountability for actions.Equipment Responsibilities :
Will be responsible to evaluate and maintain the equipment specific to the surgical unit.Ensures the restocking of supplies, quality checks of equipment as well as routine maintenance of equipment.Assemble supplies and equipment required for each surgical procedure.Provides instruments and supplies to the surgical team during surgical procedures.Cleans and prepares surgical equipment for processing and transport to and from central supply to operating suites to decontamination areas for complete sterilization and processing.Will keep the work environment clean, using a variety of disinfectants, and cleaning solutions as needed, keeping area free of clutter.Clinic Duties and Responsibilities
May work with surgeon in the clinic setting both pre-operative and post operatively.May perform dressing changes, suture removal, scheduling procedures and education with patients.Will assist with minor clinical procedures.And other duties as assigned.Communication :
Maintains open communication with the Circulating nurses, Supervisor of Surgical Services and Director of Nursing regarding departmental concerns and opportunities.Ensures effective communication with other department staff as well as medical staff regarding changes, progress or concerns related to surgical cases.Communicates plan, interventions, and expected outcome to circulating nurse, and director in regard to preparation of cases with respect and courtesyRequirements
Must be a Certified Surgical Technician, LPN or RN
Physical Requirements
The Surgical Department is a physically demanding high-stress environment.Must have a full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients.Manual and finger dexterityExcellent hand and eye coordinationStaff working in this department must be able to stand and walk for extensive periods of time.Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs may be required. (With a partner)Corrected vision and hearing to within a normal range.Staff must be able to work in sometimes stressful conditions.Benefits

Requirements
Must be a registered nurse with a current licensure to practice nursing in the state.Minimum of two-years experience, prefen-ed at least one of which is in the area of public health or home health nursing but not required.Current valid driver's license and reliable transportation.Maintains a current CPR certification.Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision.Demonstrates excellent observation, problem solving, verbal and written communication skills; nursing skills per competency checklist.Shows ability to organize and prioritize workload independently.Management experience not required. May be responsible for supervising home health aides.Maintains responsibility to develop professional self-attend seminars, and identify self -learning needs, collaborates with agency leaders in meeting learning needs. PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS : Prolonged or considerable walking or standing. Able to lift, position, or transfer clients. Able to lift supplies and equipment. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, or crouching. Visual acuity and hearing to perform required nursing skills.
