Qualifications
Candidates must have strong swimming skills (see below) and experience working with children.
Swim Instructor candidates will be evaluated on the following swimming skills :
25 yards front crawl25 yards back crawl25 yards breaststroke25 yards sidestroke25 yards butterfly25 yards elementary backstroke2 minutes of treading water, demonstrating proficiency in eggbeater, whip, and scissor kicksCandidates are required to attend, and pass, a CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Administering Emergency Oxygen course and Swim Instructors are required to attend, and pass, a YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor certification course scheduled upon hire.
Essential Functions
This position is for you, if you can :
Provide swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages and abilities in group and private settingsPlan and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA valuesPrepare written lesson plan in accordance with YMCA Swim Lessons curriculumComplete student records and progress reports comprehensively and punctuallyHelp to create new approaches to serve the needs of program participantsAdhere to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards, and ensures consistency with evidence-based practicesModel safe behavior in and around the water, know and perform necessary duties in emergency situationsMaintain constant supervision of students, identify students who need assistance, and support students as necessary to ensure a positive learning environmentProvide effective communication with students, parents and co-workersMaintain positive relationships with parents and caregivers and other staff, model relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactionsDemonstrate ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the communityDemonstrate ability to be motivators in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through aquatics
