General Definition and Conditions of Work
Performs skilled technical administrative work in the review and approval of building and construction plans insuring fire code compliance; does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Division Chief - Fire Marshal.
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some very heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds occasionally. The work requires standing and walking; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and / or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Essential Functions / Typical Tasks
Reviews and approves plans for fire code compliance and installation of fire protection equipment; performs field inspections and witness acceptance tests following the installation of fire protection equipment.
Researches code issues; confers with architects, engineers, contractors, building code enforcement officials and other building and fire protection design professionals on the proper design, installation and maintenance of fire protection equipment and features.
Conducts fire inspections of construction sites and complex fire life safety to identify code violations; prepares written inspection reports for each inspection, documenting applicable violations; maintains accurate records.
Calculates needed fire flow for structures and performs fire hydrant flow tests. Serves on community boards and committees as required.
Prepares reports and documentation for issuance of fire permit.
Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of fire suppression, techniques and procedures; through knowledge of state fire codes, laws, and ordinances; thorough knowledge of department rules and regulations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; ability to initiate and maintain reports and department records through electronic means.
Education and experience : Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in fire science, emergency management, or related field and considerable experience in fire suppression and rescue including considerable fire prevention and plan review experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of NC Fire Inspector Level III Certification.
Possession an appropriate driver's license valid in the state of North Carolina.
