About the Job

This Bioinformatics Engineer position is integral to the UMGC's operations, directly supporting the unit's work by managing the informatics infrastructure that processes data generated by sequencers and other lab instrumentation. The role involves close collaboration with other members of the informatics team, laboratory staff, and customers to enhance data handling processes and infrastructure. A primary objective is to implement analysis workflows for new services, ensuring seamless delivery of high-quality data to customers and supporting the overall research objectives of the University and its partners.

Workflow development (60%)

• Design, implement, and maintain automated pipelines for processing NGS data (e.g., WGS, RNA-seq, single-cell, ChIP-seq).
• Develop production-ready, version-controlled, well-documented software and command-line tools in Python, Perl, R, or similar languages.
• Collaborate with wet lab personnel to integrate sequencing instrumentation output into streamlined data workflows.
• Maintain and document a codebase in Git, and follow best practices for software development and reproducibility.
• Monitor workflow performance and proactively troubleshoot pipeline failures or anomalies in data quality.

Infrastructure development (30%)

Customer support (10%)

Mostly Remote Time spent working remotely is consistently 50% time or more. Collaborative or shared on campus work space to be provided while on campus.

The University of Minnesota Genomics Center (UMGC) provides genomic technologies and services to researchers and clinicians at the University of Minnesota, and to external academic and industry scientists throughout the United States and internationally. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range : $98,300 - $117,000; depending on education / qualifications / experience

Time Appointment Category : 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
