Overview

The Blandy Experimental Farm at the University of Virginia seeks a part-time, seasonal Environmental Educator (Staff Wage) to work with the preK-12 education program team. This role supports program preparation and instruction for Blandy's preK-12 environmental education programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, enthusiastic instruction of established outdoor lessons aligned with Virginia science standards for school groups, grades preK through 12.
  • Organize and maintain program supplies and help set up and break down daily programs.
  • Interact with participants in a manner consistent with the University's commitment to respect and inclusion.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education : Bachelor's degree
  • Experience : At least one year of experience. In lieu of a degree, a combination of five years of relevant education and / or experience may be considered.
  • Licensure : None
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a natural science or education field, or working toward one.
  • Experience teaching in an outdoor environment; relevant student experience may be considered.
  • Flexibility with work days and hours; typical work week includes some hours between 7 : 30 am–3 : 00 pm, Monday–Friday (no evenings or weekends).
  • Positive, professional attitude with good interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and Google Office Suites.
  • Energy, enthusiasm, and passion for learning and teaching about nature.
  • Collaborative working style and adaptability to changing program content based on grade level and teacher requests.
  • Strong commitment to safety when working with students.
  • Physical Demands

    The employee will teach outdoors in various weather conditions and may stand for prolonged periods (up to 5 hours) and walk up to 3 miles per day on varied terrain. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. Good hearing, speech, vision, movement, and dexterity are required.

    More Information

    Anticipated hourly range : $19–$22 per hour. The position will remain open until filled. This wage position is not eligible for leave or other benefits and is limited to 1500 hours of work per year. This position does not sponsor work visas and is not eligible for remote work.
