JOB SUMMARY
The Chief of Staff and Board Liaison is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, reporting directly to the President and ensuring the effective operation of the Office of the President. Serving as a trusted advisor, this role supports the President in advancing institutional priorities, manages executive communications, and fosters coordination across the university. The Chief of Staff also serves as Secretary to the Board of Trustees, strengthening governance through agenda development, trustee engagement, and board communications, while overseeing the university's grants and government relations portfolio to align external resources with the mission and vision of the University.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Office of the President
- Provide executive leadership for the operations of the Office of the President as a highly effective and responsive hub for institutional priorities.
- Draft presidential communications and collaborate with the communications team to ensure consistency of key messages.
- Serve as a senior advisor to the President on communication, engagement, and organizational priorities.
- Guide planning and follow-through of major presidential initiatives and forums.
- Oversee staff and budget within the Office of the President.
Board of Trustees Liaison
Serve as a key partner to the President and Trustees in strengthening the Board's governance and impact.Collaborate with Board leadership to shape agendas, committee priorities, and materials for effective decision-making.Serve as Secretary to the Board, ensuring compliance with bylaws and governance best practices. As secretary to the board, the position includes being secretary to the corporation as explained in the by-laws. As such, the position is an "officer" of the corporation and a signatory for certain documents.Lead trustee recruitment, onboarding, and engagement initiatives.Government Relations
Strengthen the University's government relations strategy by cultivating relationships with elected officials, policymakers, and external stakeholders.Monitor and assess legislative developments in higher education, advising the President and executive leadership on implications and opportunities. Grants Strategy & ManagementProvide strategic leadership for the University's grant portfolio, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities.Partner with senior leadership to establish funding priorities and pursue competitive opportunities.Ensure accountability and impact through compliance, reporting, and effective stewardship of awards.OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES :
Attend trainings as required.Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned by the University.If you operate a University owned, leased or personal vehicle at any time while performing your duties you must follow all policies and procedures outlined in the Operations Manual. You must have a valid driver's license and must successfully pass the online safe Driving Course and driving record check at time of hire and annually thereafter. Additionally, you must report any driving offense, on or off company time, which causes a loss, suspension, or any other change in your license status. You must report this change within one business day of the offense. You can report this change to the Human Resource Department or your direct supervisor. Failure to do so can lead to disciplinary action, up to and including terminations. Bachelor's degree required. Minimum of 7 years in similar leadership role within higher education or related industry.Strong leadership and cross-functional management skills with the ability to promote collaboration and teamwork while inspiring success, implementing strategies, and achieving key objectives.Advanced interpersonal skills including written and verbal communications, critical thinking, active listening, persuasiveness, presentation, and project management skills.Understanding of the higher education market and effective strategies specific to the industry.Comprehensive ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with faculty, staff, students, donors, corporate leaders, etc.; to act as a liaison to other departments and organizations; to form excellent working relationships with others and to motivate others.Demonstrated experience in strategic thinking, planning, and budgeting, with strong analytical, and organizational skills to help guide the University toward workable strategies and solutions.Proven ability to manage, and prioritize multiple initiatives simultaneously and achieve a high level of productivity and quality while focusing on mission and vision, often under rigid deadlines in an environment with frequent workload changes, competing demands, and interruptions.Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team without close supervision to complete assignments and discern when action of a higher level is required.Energetic, self-motivated, decisive and results-oriented; comfortable with challenges; accepts responsibility; possess a sense of humor and perspective.Dedicated to highest standards of professionalism, integrity, excellence, and honesty.Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and within FERPA and HIPAA guidelines.All new employees must complete the FERPA, Anti-Harassment, and any other required online trainings within 15 days of employment.General knowledge of the University's mission, purpose and goals and the role this position plays in achieving those goals.Additional Information :
