A recognized retail services company in New York City is actively seeking a new HR Compliance Specialist to join their team.

About the Opportunity :

Start Date : ASAP

Assignment Length : 6+ months

Schedule : Monday to Friday

Hours : 8 : 30am to 5 : 30pm

Responsibilities :

Conduct a full-scale audit of payroll processes, including pay practices, timekeeping, deductions, penalties, commission payments, and overtime calculations

Review wage & hour compliance across retail stores, including scheduling, meal and rest break practices, and exempt vs. non-exempt classifications

Assess compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., FLSA, state wage orders, paid sick leave, predictive scheduling laws, etc.)

Audit HR operations practices such as onboarding, training, employee recordkeeping, and store-level compliance documentation

Identify compliance gaps, process inefficiencies, or risk areas, and prepare detailed reports summarizing findings

Partner with Talent, Legal, Payroll, and Retail Operations leaders to develop and implement corrective action plans, including updated policies, training, and process improvements

Support remediation through direct project management, drafting policies / procedures, training managers, and working with payroll / Talent Ops teams on system fixes

Provide clear written and verbal updates to senior leadership on progress, risks, and successful resolution of issues

Qualifications :

7+ years of experience in HR Compliance, Payroll Auditing, or Wage & Hour Law

Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field

Strong knowledge of Federal, State, and Local Labor laws

Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills

Desired Skills :

HR compliance certification (e.g., PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP / SCP)

Experience with California Wage & Hour compliance

Experience in a Retail and / or Multi-state environment
