POSITION SUMMARY : The Perinatal Scrub Technician (PST) performs duties related to patient care and comfort under the direct supervision of licensed personnel. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PST functions as a team member in the provision of patient care, prior to, during, and immediately following the surgical procedure performed in the Operating Room. In addition, the PST performs special procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Assists in the patient preparation, positioning, and surgical preps as directed
- Assist in the provision of a safe and aseptic environment for the Perinatal patient
- Jointly with the Circulating Charge R.N., is responsible for the needle, sponge, and instrument counts
- Shows respect for instruments and handles them carefully. Uses, with understanding, special equipment, and is responsible for cleaning them
- Performs other related duties as needed to facilitate workflow and to promote health care
- Assures that work and assignment areas are clean and that equipment and supplies are properly cared for and stored daily.
- Assists with table instruments and room clean-up
- Provides patient assistance through training experience :
Answers call lights, intercoms promptly and courteously
Performs, records, and reports TPRs and BPs, weights, IOsPerforms personal hygiene tasks related to patient care, peri-care, care of nails and hair, changing of linen, and dressing patientsAssists with the feeding of patients if necessaryApplies the external fetal monitor to labor patients as appropriate after proper trainingCollects urine specimens under the supervision of licensed personnelReports abnormal findings or significant changes in patient conditions or patient requests promptly to the nursePerforms treatments such as sitz baths and applying packs after appropriate trainingPerforms Unit Coordinator duties, such as but not limited to :Completes birth certificates, paternity forms, and immunization records as appropriate promptly
Maintain patients’ prenatal files, all forms, and assemble patients’ chartsAssists in requisitioning supplies for the unitMaintain log books, needed records, and data collecting formsAssists in obtaining witness signaturesExercises tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality in communicating with visitors and hospital personnelAble to adapt to a changing workloadCan perform in a precise and accurate manner in handling priority tasks and emergenciesCompletes work assignment within a scheduled hour Perform other duties as requestedAssist other staff members as neededParticipates in Quality Control / Quality Improvement process as directed by the Perinatal Manager or Clinical CoordinatorAttends department / staff meetings as required (75% or a minimum of eight to meet the standard) and in-services and continuing education classes related to unit and facility needs. (CPR, annual skills updated, and orientation are mandatory).OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES :
Develops and maintains a good working relationship among health care team membersCommunicates with patients, family, and visitors tactfully and helpfullyPerforms personal hygiene tasks related to patient careDemonstrates attention to patient safety issues by using and checking patient bed rails, bed position, restraints when indicated, equipment and, obstacles within the patient’s areaObserves safety signs posted in patient care area, including infection control precautions, NPO signs, etc.Accountable for assignment and their completion within scheduled work hours.Maintains an appropriate time recordSupports and promotes safety standards, identifies risk situations and, intervenes appropriatelyRecords information accurately and legiblyPrepares equipment packs for use in the operative procedurePrepares for the following procedureDo shave preps when requested by the Perinatal Director or Clinical Manager.EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS :
Current certification through (CNA / CORT) or a hospital training programCurrent CPR certificationHigh School diploma or GEDAGE OF THE POPULATION SERVED :
Newborn Infant / Pediatric Adolescent Adult Geriatric All X No Patient Care
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Manual dexterity with fine motor ability to operate and handle equipment used in the department; Ability to hear the spoken word, auscultate for physical assessment skills and monitor alarms; Ability to see written type with corrective lenses; Ability to stand for up to several hours at a time; Ability to climb stairs; Must be able to lift 25 pounds and able to perform tasks of lifting, turning, and transferring patients.
MENTAL REQUIREMENT : Ability to follow written and oral instructions, must have the ability and desire to learn job functions outlined in the job description, must work as part of a team to achieve a common goal, and must maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
SCHEDULING AND AVAILABILITY :
Scheduling is determined by patient care needs and includes weekends, holidays, nights, call, etc.Working every other weekend is a minimum requirementShift and call assignments are modified to reflect department needsIn staff emergencies, will be able to work on alternate shifts and / or rotating job schedules or similar activities, at intervals for limited periods mandated by department needs.BackApply
