The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is a senior executive responsible for overseeing all nursing and patient care services within the inpatient rehabilitation hospital. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards and fostering a culture of clinical excellence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
Leadership & Strategy
Develop and implement nursing care standards, policies, and procedures.
Lead strategic initiatives to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
Participates in the development and execution of the hospital’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plans.
Demonstrates goal-directed behavior through annual departmental planning and evaluation.
Serve as a member of the hospital’s executive leadership team and governing body.
Clinical Oversight
Ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care for patients recovering from injuries, illnesses, or chronic conditions.
Monitor and improve clinical performance metrics and quality indicators.
Oversee infection control, wound care, and rehabilitation-specific nursing practices.
Directs and coordinates the provision of treatments, medications, and nursing services per care plans and physician orders.
Monitors nursing documentation and provides education to ensure compliance and accuracy.
Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors, and staff.
Staff Management
Recruits, selects, and retains qualified nursing personnel.
Supervises Nursing Supervisor, Staffing Coordinator, and Medical Records staff.
Oversees staff scheduling and peer review committees.
Develops and evaluates staff development programs including orientation, competency assessments, in-services, and continuing education.
Coordinates annual skills fairs in collaboration with the Quality Director.
Contributes to the professional development of nursing staff through mentorship and education.
Compliance & Accreditation
Ensure adherence to standards set by Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ), CMS, and state regulations.
Maintain hospital accreditation and readiness for surveys.
Leads disease-specific certification programs including Stroke Program and others as they develop.
Monitors employee health and ensures staff compliance with health requirements.
Collaboration & Communication
Works closely with physicians, therapists, administrators, and department leaders to foster interdisciplinary care.
Actively participates in the Medical Executive Committee, presenting and discussing trends, issues, and concerns.
Communicates with medical staff regarding clinical and care issues.
Demonstrates effective communication and creates mechanisms for collaboration across the organization.
Financial & Operational Management
Assist in budgeting and cost control for nursing and clinical departments.
Evaluate and implement technologies that enhance patient care and efficiency.
Oversees contracted services including dialysis, respiratory therapy, laboratory, and radiology services.
Reviews preadmission assessments to ensure patients needs will be met for inpatient rehabilitation
Quality Improvement & Marketing
Continuously assesses and improves the quality of care and services provided.
Identifies learning needs and maintains clinical, management, and administrative competencies.
Maintains relationships with referral sources and hospitals to identify healthcare needs and promote clinical programs.
Other Duties
Develops and revises clinical forms and policies.
Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall effectiveness of the department.
Qualifications : Education :
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
Licensure & Certifications :
Current RN license in the state of practice.
BLS certification required; ACLS preferred or required within 6 months of hire.
Experience :
Minimum 3–5 years of hospital nursing experience.
At least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
Experience in rehabilitation or post-acute care settings is highly desirable.
Skills :
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of rehabilitation nursing standards and practices.
Proficiency in clinical operations, budgeting, and performance improvement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education :
Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or attestation of completion within a set timeframe
Licensure & Certifications :
Current, valid RN license
BLS certification required; ACLS preferred or required within 6 months of hire.
Experience :
Minimum 3–5 years of hospital nursing experience.
At least 3 years in a managerial or leadership role.
Experience in rehabilitation or post-acute care settings is highly desirable.
Skills :
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of rehabilitation nursing standards and practices.
Proficiency in clinical operations, budgeting, and performance improvement.
Strong written and oral communication skills required.
