Overview
Join to apply for the Journalist in Residence Fellowship role at Instrumental Inc. This program is a paid, contract-to-hire opportunity that selects 3 to 4 early-career writers, journalists, or professionals with relevant backgrounds to join for an immersive 8-week residency at Instrumental HQ in Palo Alto, CA. At the end of the program, there may be an opportunity to join Instrumental as a full-time Journalist in Residence, leading the Build Better News Desk.
Instrumental technology is used by leading electronics brands to reduce waste in manufacturing. Our AI technology analyzes factory-floor data to automate failure identification and resolution, improving yield, quality, and time to market. To scale Build Better editorial efforts, we are launching the Build Better News Desk and seeking the inaugural team member to found and shape this vision.
What You’ll Do
- Skill up on the electronics manufacturing industry, Instrumental’s technology, and the Build Better editorial approach.
- Research and pitch timely, relevant content ideas in electronics manufacturing, operations, and supply chain—focused on consumer electronics, AI compute, and defense.
- Identify and reach out to potential sources, conduct interviews to obtain relevant details or quotes for inclusion in stories.
- Collaborate directly with Instrumental’s C-Suite (including the CEO), in-house subject matter experts, and marketing leadership for perspective on pitches, direction, and article reviews / editing.
Fellowship Deliverables
Pitch 5+ potential stories by the end of Week 1; receive feedback and select 2–3 to move forward with.Deliver two high-quality, researched journalism-style articles that meet editorial standards in Week 3.Progress beyond Week 3 to pitch stories and deliver articles, starting at one per week and ramping to two per week by Week 7.Option to write leadership profile pieces on an electronics manufacturing thought leader in the latter stage of the Fellowship.All articles meeting editorial standards will be published with byline as part of the Build Better Newsletter, News Desk, and Instrumental social channels.The Fellowship requires 30–40 hours per week, working out of Instrumental’s Palo Alto HQ or in the field; this is not a remote role.Ideal Candidate Profile
Is a strong, clear writer with a direct, journalistic style and minimal fluff; not a content-marketing role.Is curious, resourceful, and scrappy, able to dig for unique insights beyond desk research.Can identify and connect with sources, including executives.Has interest in electronics, engineering, or manufacturing; background is a plus but not required for quick learners; stays up to date on current news and identifies relevant Build Better stories for a technical audience.Open to recent graduates or more experienced professionals from journalism, writing, sales, marketing, or engineering backgrounds; applicants should describe why their background makes them a great fit for the Journalist-in-Residence role.Compensation and Employment Type
This is a contract-to-hire position. The contract stage is compensated at $25.00 / hour.Fellows selected for full-time employment may have a compensation range between $75,000–$88,000 annually, commensurate with experience and fellowship performance.Application Questions
