Description : JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title : Status : Full-time

Patrol Officer

Reports to : Police Chief Classification : Non-exempt

Definition / Purpose :

The principal responsibility of an employee in this class is to provide effective and efficient operation of assignments; ability to exercise authority consistent with the obligation imposed upon him / her by oath of office and shall be accountable to superior officers by promptly obeying legitimate orders. In addition, this position is responsible for maintaining required equipment and supplies, as well as performing any required policing duties to the level of his / her certification.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

This position requires knowledge of (and the wherewithal to apply) the following in varied police control and emergency situations :

  • Prevention and Suppression of Crime
  • Protection of Life and Property
  • Apprehension and Prosecution of Offenders
  • Preservation of Regulatory Measures
  • Preservation of Peace
  • Enforcement of Traffic Laws
  • Local codes related to emergencies, city ordinances, and state statutes

A Patrol Officer must possess strong communication skills (both orally and in writing), enabling him / her to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public. This position also necessitates the ability to read and interpret manuals, policies, and other documents, as well as operate / care for necessary police equipment and gear.

A Patrol Officer must maintain the physical ability to perform the following.

  • Lift and or move heavy objects or persons during a rescue
  • Physically restrain individuals during law enforcement duties
  • Give chase on foot in order to apprehend violators / suspects
  • Withstand adverse weather conditions
  • Maintain visual acuity in order to perform duties in daytime or nighttime
  • Speak clearly and hear sufficiently to conduct necessary duties
  • Remain free from mental disorders which would prevent interfere with police duties
  • A Patrol Officer must be self-disciplined, setting a good example of productivity and adherence to departmental Rules & Regulations, Policies & Procedures, and Special Directives.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Depending upon assignment, duties may include (but are not limited to) the following :

  • Be familiar with policies and procedures, effectively convey instructions accordingly to all personnel under his / her supervision and ensure proper execution of those policies and procedures.
  • Perform any required policing duties to the level of his / her certification.
  • Conduct preventative patrol, respond to emergencies
  • Investigate reported crimes, interview suspects, witnesses, victims
  • Investigate traffic crashes and respond to hazardous roadway conditions
  • Prepare reports and testify in court
  • Apprehend & arrest violators, serve warrants
  • Mediate disputes and assist in Mental Health crisis incidents
  • Provide traffic and crowd control during special events
  • Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of the Police facility, gear, and equipment.
  • Maintain current Police certifications as deemed by the State of Ohio.
  • Coordinate efforts with other members of the Department so that teamwork may ensure continuity of purpose and maximum achievement of police objectives.
  • By means of studying, a Patrol Officer shall become familiar with laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to the movement of vehicular traffic, pedestrian traffic, traffic enforcement, parking of vehicles, accident investigation, and felony and misdemeanor crimes.
  • Must comport oneself in accordance with high ethical standards both on and off duty.
  • Accountable for securing, receipting, marking, and properly transporting all evidence and property coming into custody as prescribed by Policy & Procedures and under the law.
  • Completion of records and reports as prescribed by departmental procedure or as ordered by the commanding officer.
  • Proficiently operate police equipment including but not limited to : police cruiser, weapons, radio, cameras, recorders, BAC Intoxilyzer, electronic speed measuring devices, and department computers
  • A Patrol Officer shall be assigned to a motorized vehicle and shall be available for radio dispatch and when getting out of the vehicle, shall notify the radio dispatcher of that fact and give a location and Code Signal for the reason of departing the vehicle. Further, a Patrol Officer shall exert every effort to satisfy the needs of citizens requesting service, assistance, or information, as courteously as circumstances will permit. Hours of duty will be established by the posted work schedule. A Patrol Officer shall be available at all times in cases of special needs or emergencies and shall respond punctually to an assignment.

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Must have a high school diploma (or equivalent)
  • Must have a current Ohio Peace Officers Certificate
  • Any combination of education and or experience beyond high school demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and aptitude for police patrol work.
