Summary

The Surgical Scrub Tech's responsibilities include preparing and assisting the surgeon during procedures using aseptic technique, maintaining supplies and instruments, providing quick turnover for subsequent procedures, and assisting the nursing staff in providing quality patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review assigned cases the prior workday to ensure all necessary supplies and equipment are available.
  • Practice and maintain aseptic technique during operative procedures and while preparing the sterile field.
  • Utilize surgeon's preference cards to provide necessary supplies for each case.
  • Anticipate surgeon's needs and monitor for any breaches in aseptic technique.
  • Hand off all tissue removed from patients from the sterile field and identify it to the circulating nurse.
  • Communicate updates needed for preference cards.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist in orientation of new staff as needed.
  • Help with room turnover between cases, including transferring patients to recovery, cleaning and reprocessing instruments, and preparing the OR for the next case.
  • Ensure patient safety by following protocols such as sponge, needle, and instrument counts, participating in the Time Out procedure, and handling medications properly.
  • Communicate with OR Director / OR Supervisor regarding operational issues.
  • Maintain employee safety by following PPE and sharps handling protocols.
  • Maintain supplies and instruments, including inventory management and proper handling of instrumentation.
  • Perform effectively in emergency or stressful situations, staying calm and troubleshooting technical challenges.

    Professional Requirements

  • Complete annual education requirements and maintain regulatory standards.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and punctuality.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities and adhere to organizational policies.
  • Certification and Education

  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology school.
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • Surgical Scrub Tech Certification preferred.
  • Physical Demands

    Requires talking, hearing, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and occasionally lifting over 100 pounds.
