Assistant Farm Manager
We invite you to join the high-energy team at Chatham Bars Inn Farm, an 8-acre working farm in Brewster, MA which produces well over 100,000 pounds and 125 varieties of vegetables each year, most of which is used by the culinary team at Chatham Bars Inn. The Farm features innovative farming techniques such as hydroponics and Slovenian beekeeping and also offers a seasonal Farm Stand open to the public and weekly farm-to-table outdoor dinners. The farm is a part of Chatham Bars Inn, a Forbes Travel Guide Five Star Hotel on Cape Cod, Massachusetts with 25 oceanfront acres, 217 rooms and suites, five restaurants, boating, a private beach, full-service spa and endless recreation activities.
The responsibilities of the Assistant Farm Manager include but are not limited to assisting in the management and coordination of all farming operations. The specific responsibilities and expectations are outlined below :
- Responsible for assisting in the execution of the annual Farm Plan, as created by the Farm Manager
- Responsible for overseeing and coordinating all greenhouse production including the production of field crops, nursery crops, microgreens, edible flowers and cut flower transplants
- Responsible for maintaining planting schedule for all field and nursery crops
- Responsible for overseeing the maintenance of all greenhouses and related equipment
- Responsible for managing all hydroponic crop production
- Responsible for managing and overseeing the maintenance of irrigation systems throughout the farm
- Expected to operate and assist in the maintenance of a wide range of farm equipment, ranging from tractors to smaller engine implements
- Expected to scout for pests and diseases and implement an IPM program in coordination with the Farm Manager and Field Supervisor
- Expected to assist in the management, scheduling, oversight, and training of all farm employees in coordination with the Farm Manager
- Expected to enthusiastically assist in general farm tasks as demanded by the seasonal needs of the operation
Qualifications :
Bachelor of Science Degree in related field (Agriculture, Horticulture, etc)Proven experience in farming management is necessary, minimum of 3 yearsDeep passion and commitment to organic growthMust have organic soil-building and composting experienceSuperior time management necessaryBasic accounting knowledge (sales receipts, purchasing, budgeting, labor costs, inventory, etc)Must be a hands-on farm managerExperience in greenhouse and nursery management, plant propagationKnowledge of landscape and irrigation systemsExperience in pesticide methods, management, and application proceduresKnowledge of plant, flowers, and produce nutritionKnowledge of plant, flowers, and produce classifications and their requirementsPhysically able to bend, stand, walk, and pull for long periods of time and lift-up to 50lbs repeatedlyMust have a valid drivers licenseMust flexible with schedules working weekends and holidays may be required
