Position Summary Description
Performs transmission and generation design and settings, including managing diverse work assignments requiring highly developed professional judgment and knowledge of transmission and generation protection systems. As required, provides assistance to departments within Seminole associated with protection and control systems.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
This position is open to candidates based on their level and type of career experiences. The minimum requirement for an Engineer I position is a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET Accredited Institution. Advanced degree in engineering is preferred. Candidates should be registered or eligible to become a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida. Experience in electric power utility in the discipline of system protection, emphasis on the design and settings.
Experience requirements for an Engineer II position is three (3) years, Engineer III position is six (6) years, eight (8) years for a Senior Engineer position and fifteen (15) years for a Principal. Consideration for the higher-level classifications will require more experiences directly related to the duties of the position as well as meeting more of the preferred qualifications. Professional registration as an engineer in Florida or an advanced degree in engineering may substitute for one (1) year of experience.

Prepares and designs complex transmission system protection standards, designs and settings for Seminole high-voltage transmission system to ensure BES integrityPerforms project management on system protection projectsWorks on green-field and brown-field (retrofit) Protection and Control ProjectsPrepares, reviews and verifies system protection design and settings, transmission protection schematics and relay elementary diagrams, and relay test plans for transmission and generation assetsServes as subject matter expert for assigned NERC standardsRecommends to his / her direct supervisor, any upgrades or advancement in technology required to keep Seminole’s protection and control systems and / or schemes up to industry standards and best practicesReviews and approves staff and consultant designs and calculations for Seminole protection schemes to assure proper system operationDevelops specifications (if required) for all assigned projects and manages the request for proposal (or sole source) process with Seminole’s Supply ManagementParticipates / evaluates bid proposals, recommends apparent successful bidder and assembles presentation data for his or her supervisor for any award that requires Executive Staff and / or Board actionReviews inventory for relay protection components for facility ratings purposesAnalyzes all system disturbances for Seminole and all member delivery points to ascertain cause / effect and remedial action if necessaryDevelops system protection portion of substation operating instructions and assists System Operations with the development of restoration procedures for unscheduled outagesRepresents Seminole on applicable SERC and FRCC technical committees relating to protection and controlKeeps abreast of new technologies and advancements, as well as participates at some level with outside organizations such as IEEE or NERC standard drafting teamsPerforms NERC Compliance Program roles if / as designated in Seminole’s Standard Ownership Matrix (SOM) including ongoing evidence retention in “audit-ready” form as applicable and directed. You should also be familiar with Seminole’s Enterprise Internal Compliance Program (ENT-GCD-RGC-EP-054) to further your understanding of Seminole’s compliance program and the context of your duties and responsibilities attendant to your designation in the SOM.Performs other duties as applicable to the position or as assigned.Physical Requirements
Must be able to follow established protective measures including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE). Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.
Working Conditions
Some travel, overnight stays, and work outside of normal business hours to existing and future transmission facilities, substation and generator sites as required. While working in certain areas of substations and / or switchyards, there is the potential for exposure to hazards typical of an industrial working environment.
