- Summary
The Advanced Swiss Set-Up / Operator Machinist is a highly skilled, senior-level position reporting to the Swiss Department Lead. This role requires deep expertise in setting up, operating, and optimizing precision Swiss turning equipment to manufacture complex medical device components. As a critical member of Mountain Manufacturing, an end-to-end product development partner, we rely on your technical mastery to support customers through design, prototyping, component manufacturing, and sub-assembly. The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in regulated manufacturing, demonstrates a strong command of ISO 13485 / GMP quality standards, and consistently delivers precision parts that meet the tightest tolerances.
- Key Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and maintain Swiss CNC work centers (e.g. Citizen L12, L20, M32, K16) to manufacture high-precision medical device components.
- Execute tool offsets, calibration, tool changes, and fine adjustments to optimize cycle time and part quality.
- Interpret legacy part programs and new production work orders to ensure stable and consistent machine performance.
- Perform preventive maintenance and basic repair tasks to support equipment uptime.
- Inspect parts visually and dimensionally using measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, thread gauges, comparators), microscopes, Micro-Vu, CMM, vision systems, etc.
- Ensure strict material control, part traceability, segregation of nonconforming material, and documentation in alignment with quality systems.
- Analyze and troubleshoot machining or process-related issues; lead root-cause investigations and corrective actions.
- Document inspection results, process parameters, and nonconformances; maintain audit-ready records.
- Support and participate in continuous improvement, Lean, and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Lead or support process development and qualification of new parts.
- Train, mentor, and assist less-experienced machinists to build team competency.
- Enforce a safe work environment by complying with OSHA standards and internal safety policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Qualifications / Experience
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in precision Swiss turning / Swiss-style machining, preferably within a medical device or regulated environment.
- Mastery of GD&T, blueprint interpretation, tight-tolerance machining, and geometric dimensioning.
- Solid knowledge of ISO 13485, GMP, and quality practices in regulated manufacturing.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and experience handling nonconforming parts.
- Proficiency in shop mathematics and mechanical calculations.
- Ability to use hand tools and perform minor maintenance.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively.
- Excellent communication skills and aptitude for cross-functional engagement.
- Prior involvement in continuous improvement / Lean manufacturing.
- Experience training or mentoring others.
- Physical / Environmental Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (team lift or mechanical assistance for heavier loads).
- Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling.
- Repetitive hand / arm motions, dexterity for small components.
- 20 / 20 vision (corrected or uncorrected) to inspect fine features.
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
- Exposure to oil, cutting fluids, metal particles, noise, cleaning solvents, coolant, sparks, sharp edges.
- PPE usage (safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, etc.)

Pay : $37.00 - $42.00 per hour
Expected hours : 40 – 45 per week
