About The Position

Job Title : Registered Nurse (RN)

License : Active Illinois license required or confirmation of application process initiated

Certifications : BLS required; ACLS recommended

Must-Have :

  • ICU or Intermediate (Stepdown) experience with a nurse to patient ratio of 3 to 1 or 2 to 1 is essential.
  • Experience with trach and ventilated patients is required.
  • Must be able to titrate drips, including Cardene, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Heparin, and Vasopressors.

Description :

The Stepdown Care Unit has 20 beds, including 8 private rooms and the rest semi-private.

The nurse-to-patient ratio is 3 to 1.

Registered Nurses will care for patients with a wide range of medical conditions, including COPD, CHF, diabetes, sepsis, renal issues, DKA, alcohol withdrawal, overdoses, and pneumonia.

Patients may also include those with neuro, surgical, and cardiac conditions.

Experience with Bipap, Cpap, face mask ventilation, trachs, chest tubes, G tubes, NG tubes, PICC lines, and central lines is expected.

Charge nurses are present on each shift, although they may take patient assignments if staffing is not ideal.

There are 2 Patient Care Technicians per shift, each responsible for up to 10 patients when the unit is full.

All patients are on bedside monitors, with tele techs available to interpret strips.

Nurses will confirm readings via Phillips monitors.

Shifts are 12 hours, from 7 PM to 7 AM, with scheduling coordinated with the unit supervisor.

Weekend coverage is required for every other weekend, with night shifts on Friday and Saturday, and day shifts on Saturday and Sunday.

Registered Nurses will rotate through every other holiday, working the companion day of major holidays.

Travel RNs may be floated based on unit needs and are expected to adapt to the level of care required.

There is flexibility in dress code; any scrub color is acceptable.

Unit-specific orientation includes training on the electronic health record system and working with an educator on the unit.
