Job Summary

The Public Safety Officer under the general supervision of the Public Safety Sergeant is responsible for maintaining the security and safety of persons and property on the university campus; identifying potential security and safety hazards; being observant and responding to major incidents or potential criminal activity on campus; maintaining good public relations by assisting others as a source of information and direction; overseeing the controlling and regulating of traffic and parking; investigating all security, safety, student conduct and traffic incidents. The Public Safety Officer may be expected to exercise the power of arrest as an armed Public Safety Department employee. The Public Safety Officer shall participate in the day-to-day shift work of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) in accordance with University Policy, State Statutes, DPS directives, and Special Orders prescribed by the University under the direction of the Director of Public Safety (Chief) or designee.

Shifts Available :

2nd Shift : 3 : 00 PM – 11 : 00 PM

3rd Shift : 11 : 00 PM – 7 : 00 AM

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Patrol university property to deter and detect criminal activity, safety hazards, and policy violations.

Respond to calls for service and incidents requiring public safety intervention.

Enforce parking, traffic, and campus safety regulations.

Provide security and crowd management at special events.

Investigate incidents (criminal, traffic, safety, and student conduct) and prepare detailed written reports.

Respond promptly to serious or emergency situations, including medical emergencies.

Assist community members by providing information, directions, and support.

Carry and properly utilize department-issued equipment, including firearm, Taser, baton, and pepper spray.

Serve in “on-call” capacity as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned by DPS leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in criminology, law enforcement, security management, or a related field required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in law enforcement, security, or related field preferred.

POST certification as a Missouri police officer preferred.

Must obtain and maintain an armed security officer license (St. Louis County / Metropolitan Police Private Security Licensing Unit) within 30 days of employment.

Valid driver’s license required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Proficiency in handling and discharging firearms safely.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare professional reports.

Ability to work effectively with a diverse student, staff, and community population.

Strong interpersonal skills—patient, approachable, and service-oriented.

Computer proficiency (minimum 25 wpm typing).

Self-motivated, dependable, and able to perform in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Ability to exercise sound judgment, confidentiality, and accountability.

Flexibility to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and respond during emergencies or campus closures.

Must maintain a working phone (cell or landline).

Physical Requirements

Ability to detain and restrain combative individuals when necessary.

Frequent lifting / carrying of up to 25 lbs.; occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.

Ability to walk, stand, drive vehicles / golf carts, and patrol for extended periods.

Sufficient vision and hearing for effective patrol and communication.

Ability to provide first aid, CPR, and operate an AED (training / certification provided).

Working Conditions

Requires working 2nd or 3rd shift, including weekends, holidays, and after-hours.

May be called to duty during emergencies or inclement weather.

Work may occur in outdoor environments and adverse weather conditions.

As an essential position, attendance on campus is generally required, even during reduced operations.
