Police Officer

The City of Federal Way Police Department is seeking dedicated officers to join their team. This position offers a competitive salary range from $89,592.00 to $120,708.00 annually. The job is located at 33325 8th Ave S, Federal Way, and is a regular full-time position.

This role is represented by the Federal Way Police Guild. Experienced officers will be hired at a wage commensurate to their experience level. Requirements include high school graduation, successful completion of a basic police academy, minimum of one year of continuous law enforcement employment, and no more than 18 months break in service. College level course work in law enforcement or related fields, bilingual capability, and specialized law enforcement training are highly desirable. Prior to employment, candidates must be a citizen of the United States of America or a lawful permanent resident, attain the age of 21 years, possess a valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record, and pass a thorough employment reference and background investigation, psychological and general medical evaluation, FBI record check, and polygraph examination. Felony conviction disqualifies.

Incentives for lateral officers include a hiring bonus of $40,000 paid in four installments : $5,000 upon meeting requirements for the Equivalency Academy, $10,000 upon successful completion of the six-month probationary period, $10,000 at one year anniversary of hire, and $15,000 at eighteen months anniversary. Officers are also eligible for additional career development pay incentives.

The basic function of this position includes enforcing state statutes and local ordinances, apprehending suspects, responding to disturbances, patrolling and conducting surveillance, receiving training, operating a vehicle, communicating with the public, completing reports and documentation, and performing a variety of specialized duties as assigned. Successful candidates will have a strong service orientation and demonstrated record of responsiveness to community priorities and concerns.

The incumbent will create and nurture a community-oriented public safety department, fostering an efficient citizen-police partnership to ensure a safe and secure city.

Essential duties and responsibilities include developing relationships, deciding, motivating, controlling, cooperating, disciplining, supervising, ensuring security, informing, assisting, collecting information, analyzing, selling, administering, responding physically, using tools, controlling vehicles, and using the senses.

Knowledge of police department organization, principles, practices, and procedures, community policing concepts, state, county, and city laws, traffic and crowd control techniques, rules of evidence, operation of police vehicles and equipment, and crime prevention procedures is required. Ability to exercise discretion, protect the public, prepare reports, present evidence in court, maintain knowledge of the law, respond to emergencies, apply first aid, maintain proficiency in driving and firearms, analyze situations, maintain self-control, participate in specialized programs, communicate effectively, understand and work within the scope of authority, relate to diverse populations, operate a vehicle, observe legal driving practices, and perform essential work activities is also required.

Environmental conditions include indoor and outdoor environments, time in a vehicle, sitting, standing, walking, running, stooping, kneeling, climbing, exposure to various conditions, and potential exposure to gunfire, toxic chemicals, and abuse. Employees are assigned shifts covering all twenty-four hours, seven days a week.
