Bachelor’s in Medical Technology, Clinical Lab Science, or related field, National certification (ASCP, AMT, or equivalent), and 1–2+ years recent hospital lab experience. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

Sunbelt Staffing is hiring an experienced Surgical Tech First Assistant for a 13-week travel contract in Waco, TX. This unique opportunity offers a consistent schedule of Thursday shifts only (12 hours per week), with potential for contract extensions.

Role Overview

The Surgical Tech First Assistant functions in a dual role : as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) under the direction of an RN, and as a First Assistant under the direction of a surgeon. This position assists surgical teams during major and complex procedures, ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and surgical outcomes.

Responsibilities

Prepare operating rooms with proper instruments, supplies, and specialty equipment

Scrub in for complex surgical cases, anticipating surgeon needs and assisting as directed

Assist with patient positioning, prepping, draping, and wound closure techniques

Pass instruments, hold retractors, tie off vessels, cut / cauterize tissue, and apply dressings as directed by the surgeon

Maintain sterile technique, ensure OR cleanliness, and follow specimen protocols

Collaborate with surgeons and surgical teams on equipment and supply needs

Mentor and precept newer surgical staff as a resource within the department

Qualifications

BLS certification

CSFA certification (NBSTSA) required

Minimum of 4 years of recent Surgical Tech First Assist experience

Strong knowledge of surgical anatomy, instrumentation, and OR protocols
