Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027. CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person's individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use. Central State Hospital is recruiting for a Security Lieutenant to oversee Public Safety Officers on the Petersburg Campus and ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This position is responsible for supervising and supporting officers in performing patrols, responding to calls for service, conducting investigations, preventing and deterring contraband, and enforcing state laws and hospital policies. The Public Safety Lieutenant will provide coaching, training, and evaluations to staff, ensure compliance with HIPAA and departmental standards, and maintain accurate reporting and documentation. Additional responsibilities include coordinating with law enforcement agencies, ensuring adequate staffing and scheduling, promoting a culture of safety and professionalism, and serving as a role model in daily operations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills while actively supporting the mission of the hospital through collaboration, accountability, and a commitment to safety and recovery.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Successfully Perform the Job :

• Knowledge of law enforcement, and the ability to compose clear and concise investigative reports and other written communication
• Ability to read and understand departmental policies, procedures, instructions, law and regulations
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner and be able to perform preventive operator's maintenance
• Ability to become certified as a DCJS unarmed Security Officer
• Ability to perform effective searches of property
• Interpersonal skills for dealing with sensitive, emotional or potentially controversial interpersonal situations
• Exhibit the ability to operate a personal computer and perform data entry
• Ability to work any of the Three (3) permanent shifts or for a specific period of time, or any required overtime to meet campus and / or departmental needs
