This position involves performing a variety of professional library work, including reference services, materials selection, children's and young adult services, readers' guidance, cataloging, computers, and community programs. The role also includes related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics : This is the entry-level position in the Librarian series. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes are mastered.
Employment Details : This is a part-time, non-benefited position limited to 919 hours annually (July 1 - June 30), with less than 30 hours per week on average. Hours vary between 0-16 weekly, depending on staffing needs. Hourly employees are paid on an hourly or per diem basis and are not eligible for benefits or Civil Service Rules. This recruitment remains open until sufficient applications are received and may close at any time without notice. Early application is encouraged.
Essential Functions include : Providing reference and instructional services to library users of all ages, assisting with library facilities, planning and delivering programs, instructing on internet and computer use, resolving complaints, deselecting materials, recommending purchases, developing displays, staying current with library trends, and cataloging materials. Responsibilities may also include managing library operations in the absence of senior staff, conducting tours, training staff and volunteers, preparing reports, and maintaining order and safety.
Qualifications : A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution, or a Bachelor's degree with relevant coursework and experience, or current enrollment in an MLS program with coursework completed, or a relevant subject master's degree with library experience. A valid California driver’s license may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Knowledge of library principles, research techniques, cataloging, laws and policies, public relations, budgeting, supervision, and computer applications. Ability to assess needs, use library systems, locate and evaluate information, interpret data, plan programs, operate equipment, communicate effectively, and work tactfully with diverse groups.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions : Sitting, standing, walking, twisting, reaching, bending, lifting up to 20 lbs., pushing carts, and working indoors and outdoors. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is required.
