Overview

Law Fellow (Office of General Counsel) at National Education Association. This position is part of the NEA Office of General Counsel and starts in Fall 2026. The Fellowship is for one year, with the option to extend for one additional year upon mutual agreement. The Office hosts between three and four Law Fellows each year.

Responsibilities

The NEA Law Fellowship offers the opportunity for recent law school graduates to work on a wide variety of litigation and advocacy projects to advance the cause of public education and the interests of educators and students. Fellows work collaboratively within a legal team of over a dozen attorneys. The Fellowship encompasses work across areas including schooling issues, labor policy, and education-related litigation and advocacy. Fellows may participate in hearings, meetings, events, and strategy discussions with NEA lawyers and colleagues in law firms across the country. Law Fellows are typically based at NEA’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Specific docket topics and areas include, but are not limited to :

  • Political law, union rights, employment discrimination, student civil rights, privacy law, federal and state constitutional rights, and immigration law.
  • Legal disputes in public education and labor policy contexts (school funding, charter school expansion, public-sector collective bargaining).
  • Advising on compliance requirements under corporate and tax laws, campaign-finance laws, and the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act.
  • Representation before courts including the U.S. Supreme Court and U.S. Courts of Appeals as part of the NEA Office of General Counsel docket.
  • Participation in NOLEA (National Organization of Lawyers for Educational Associations) activities and annual conference.

Salary starts at $80,000 per year. Fellows receive a generous benefits package including medical and dental insurance and paid time off.

Qualifications

  • JD required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, excellent research and writing skills.
  • Desire to practice union-side labor and / or education law.
