Description : GENERAL SUMMARY :
Reporting to the Outlet Operations Manager, Outlet Safety Captain is responsible for assisting in the overall processing of salvage materials at one of the Goodwill outlet locations while providing a safe environment for Employees, Program Participants and Customers. The Outlet Safety Captain will process materials that are being recycled from our stores and sold out of our outlets or to salvage vendors. This position will have a variety of responsibilities including moving, sorting, rotating and disposing of salvage materials, safely and effectively operate the salvage processing equipment, and ensure that the daily production goals are met on a consistent basis. The Outlet Safety Captain provides a point of contact for Employees and Program Participants concerning the implementation and compliance of Goodwill’s Health and Safety policies and procedures in Outlet locations. The Outlet Safety Captain works as a liaison between the Outlet and the Safety Department to accomplish Safety Goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Primarily operates all salvage processing equipment including Tipper, Compactor, and Baler.
- Receives ongoing training on all salvage processing equipment in accordance with Goodwill’s policies and procedures.
- Accurately documents production numbers and consistently meets company production goals for processing salvage.
- Sorts and grades salvage materials by separating into quality level (Outlet or Salvage).
- Rotates salvage tables into and out of the outlet sales floor.
- Moves salvage materials to the various stations of the salvage process.
- Manually places salvage materials into various machines of the salvage process.
- Adheres to all Goodwill safety requirements which includes wearing (Personal Protective Equipment) PPE while processing salvage at all times.
- Performs necessary record keeping pertaining to daily activities and other reports as needed in a neat and legible manner.
- Loads / Unloads trailers safely and effectively.
- Maintains the appearance of the building exterior and parking lot.
- Maintains a clean and orderly store processing area, good housekeeping and work environment.
- Performs daily, weekly, and monthly safety inspections in all areas of the store during their scheduled shift.
- Ensures all box knives are Goodwill issued and that employees are using them in a safe manner and provide training as needed regarding proper usage of box knives.
- Ensures first aid kits and BBP kits are complete and in their designated location.
- Inspects restrooms for cleanliness and compliance with all local health ordinances (i.e. towel and toilet dispensers functional and in use, sharp containers are not full, etc.)
- Ensures alarmed fire exits are secure and free from obstructions.
- Ensures that all Goodwill equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, crown stackers etc. are only used by authorized personnel and operated according to all safety policies and procedures.
- Conducts routine inspections of the sales floor and warehouse aisles and walkways, looking for slip / trip hazards, low lying objects, unsafe stacking of product, bins or gaylords over packed or top heavy or any other obstructions which may cause injury to employees and / or customers.
- Conducts routine group safety huddles with management to discuss current safety topics as established by the Risk Management Department as well as any site-specific safety concerns which may exist.
- Ensures daily, weekly and monthly inspection forms and all other safety related incident reports and materials are forwarded to the Safety Department.
- Conducts safety orientations for new hires, identifying key safety issues such as the location and use of the SDS binder, first aid kit, and store evacuation plans.
- Issues required safety training materials requested by the Safety Department.
- Participates in Regional Safety Captain meetings conducted by the Safety Manager.
- Receives and maintains training in CPR / First Aid provided by Goodwill.
- Assists the Management Team in conducting mandatory quarterly emergency drills.
- Assists the Management Team in the event of an emergency evacuation or other emergency situation.
- Participates in the NDI and Hazardous Waste Management training activities and effectively acts as a resource for employees to ensure compliance with the organization’s current program.
- Exemplifies safety at all times, following all safety rules and regulations.
- Promotes and demonstrates cooperation and teamwork; assists and shares knowledge and information with other employees as needed.
- Provides necessary customer service while projecting a positive image during public contact.
- Attends meetings and training sessions as required.
- Ensures compliance with all Goodwill Industries® Sacramento Valley Northern Nevada policies, CARF standards, and safety and security regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

This position is a full time, non-exempt position eligible for Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance; 403(b) retirement plan; Paid Holidays, Vacation and Sick Leave. This position is employed by Goodwill Industries® of Sacramento Valley and Northern Nevada, Inc.
