Job Summary
The Fiber Technician is responsible for all aspects of fiber installation, termination, testing, and splicing.
General Job Duties and Responsibilities
Cabling & Termination
- Must have basic copper termination skills.
- Install work area outlets for floors, modular furniture, and walls (terminate CAT 3 and CAT 5 jacks, mount faceplates and surface mount boxes).
- Build and organize telecom closets (mount and install backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optics, and related hardware).
- Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cables as required.
- Complete all IDC connections (e.g., terminate 110 / 66 blocks and patch panels).
- Perform continuity testing on horizontal and riser cables using volt-ohmmeters, troubleshooting opens, shorts, crosses, and transposed pairs.
- Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO / MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
- Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
- Terminate and breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g., Corning / Commscope, 3DNX).
- Terminate indoor tight-buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
- Install fan-out kits including buffer tubes.
- Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA / EIA standards for multimode and single-mode fiber.
- Complete all required project documentation accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, and tool transfers.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Testing
Test fiber using OTDR and Fluke DTX 180.Troubleshoot with OTDR to identify and correct end-to-end or network-wide issues.Splicing
Perform mechanical and fusion splicing for all types of fiber cable.Complete splices at building entrances, maintenance spaces, and direct-buried locations.Physical and Mental Requirements
Must be self-motivated, positive, and professional, contributing to a collaborative and improvement-focused work environment.Serve as a liaison between the company and customer representatives as needed.Possess strong problem-solving, critical thinking, reading, writing, and communication skills.Able to work at heights, from ladders, and in confined spaces.Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.Must be able to distinguish colors, read small print, and hear audible signals.Must be available to travel within assigned territory as needed.Regular attendance is required.Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent required.Proficient in using all standard tools listed for the trade.Skilled in terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat-cure).Experienced in testing and troubleshooting MMF and SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.Own reliable transportation (truck, van, or SUV).Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in fiber installation preferred.Industry certifications (Corning / FOA) preferred.Experience in data center installations preferred.Experience with mechanical and fusion splicing preferred.OSP and confined space entry experience preferred.Must be able to use standard trade tools including screwdrivers, drywall saws, torpedo levels, tape measures, snips, pliers, wrenches, cable strippers, flashlights, gloves, punch tools (110 / 66 block), crimp tools, and Krone / 3M / BIX tools.Company Description
