Job Summary

The Fiber Technician is responsible for all aspects of fiber installation, termination, testing, and splicing.

General Job Duties and Responsibilities

Cabling & Termination

• Must have basic copper termination skills.
• Install work area outlets for floors, modular furniture, and walls (terminate CAT 3 and CAT 5 jacks, mount faceplates and surface mount boxes).
• Build and organize telecom closets (mount and install backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optics, and related hardware).
• Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cables as required.
• Complete all IDC connections (e.g., terminate 110 / 66 blocks and patch panels).
• Perform continuity testing on horizontal and riser cables using volt-ohmmeters, troubleshooting opens, shorts, crosses, and transposed pairs.
• Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO / MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
• Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
• Terminate and breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g., Corning / Commscope, 3DNX).
• Terminate indoor tight-buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
• Install fan-out kits including buffer tubes.
• Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA / EIA standards for multimode and single-mode fiber.
• Complete all required project documentation accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, and tool transfers.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
