The Division of Research for the Missouri Senate is seeking an attorney in a nonpartisan, fast-paced, multi-faceted legislative environment. This is a highly professional position working with members of the Missouri Senate at the State Capitol Building.
Responsibilities
- Draft legislation for the Missouri Senate, including bills, substitute bills and amendments.
- Staff committees of the Senate, interim committees, and Senate / House Joint committees with research and analysis of legislation and topics before the committees, and draft reports for committees as necessary.
- Staff the legislative sessions of the Missouri Senate by monitoring debate and providing requested changes / amendments to bills being debated on the floor of the Senate.
- Prepare summaries on legislation debated in the Senate.
- Review bills on matters of technical form. Assists Senate members with topical research on matters of public policy, prepare legal opinions, analyze legislative proposals, and develop policy alternatives.
- Assists members with constituent matters by obtaining information and drafting responses which require technical information.
- Monitors developments in public policy and develops skills relevant to the issue areas assigned to the staff attorney.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
Qualifications
Excellent writing and oral communication skills.Ability to work well under pressure, adapt to various situations, and prioritize multiple work assignments simultaneously while managing various interruptions and meeting deadlines as required by the legislative process.Advanced knowledge of research methods.Knowledge of the legislative process.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.Education
Juris Doctorate from an accredited university or college.Work at Missouri's State Capitol Building (12 additional staff members in the office).
