Janitorial Maintenance Worker

Performs entry-level work and is responsible for all janitorial duties for City buildings at various locations, and for maintaining the cleanliness of sidewalks surrounding the buildings. Generally, this position uses routine skills and works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, and wax floors; vacuum and clean carpets.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms, to include cleaning mirrors, glass doors, windows, blinds, door handles, light fixtures, and dust furniture and baseboards.
  • Empty and clean waste receptacles, clean and dust office surfaces, vacuum offices, spot-clean walls, and properly set up and clean rooms for City activities.
  • Sweep or blow off debris and standing water from sidewalks around the buildings.
  • Sprinkle deicing agents on sidewalks as a safety precaution during inclement weather.
  • Replenish all paper supplies and soap dispensers.
  • Set-up and take-down tables, chairs, and other room furnishings when requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of six months of experience or training in janitorial maintenance.
  • Working schedule outside of the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours.
  • Required Certificate and Licenses

  • Valid Texas driver's license or its equivalent from any U.S. State. (Occasionally needs to drive between city facilities.)
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of related experience in janitorial maintenance.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must be able to read labels and safety data sheets on cleansers, chemicals, and other substances used in the performance of duties.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to place electronic orders using a mobile phone application.
  • Ability to use computer-based email program and to maintain online inventory of supplies, paper products, and chemical equipment.
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as special events, on-call, or emergency response situations.
  • When requested, must be able to wear personal protective equipment, steel-toed leather boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.
  • Skill in operating assigned equipment tools and vehicles safely.
  • Physical Demands & Additional Information

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle and feel items, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds. Equipment, machines, tools and work aids : Towels, brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and carpet extractor. Working environment : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and / or humid conditions. Occasionally, the employee may be exposed to airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
