Position Overview
We are seeking a seasoned and detail-driven Inpatient Auditor Coder to join our dynamic Audit and Compliance team. This role is ideal for professionals with a strong foundation in inpatient auditing—particularly in high-acuity, high-volume hospital settings such as Level I Trauma Centers. While coding proficiency is essential, this position emphasizes deep audit expertise and the ability to identify and resolve complex documentation and coding issues.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct thorough audits of inpatient medical records, with a specialized focus on Level I Trauma cases
Review and validate ICD-10-CM / PCS, MS-DRG, and APR-DRG assignments using 3M CAC / encoder tools
Identify and document coding inaccuracies, missed diagnoses, and documentation gaps
Analyze audit outcomes to identify trends and root causes; recommend corrective actions for continuous improvement
Prepare comprehensive audit reports and concise executive summaries for leadership and stakeholders
Collaborate cross-functionally with CDI and HIM teams to ensure documentation accuracy and regulatory compliance
Initiate and manage physician queries to clarify documentation for accurate code assignment
Ensure full compliance with AHIMA , CMS , and payer-specific audit standards
Required Qualifications
Active AHIMA credential : CCS or RHIT required (CCS-P is a plus)
Minimum 5 years of inpatient coding experience, with at least 3 years in auditing roles
Extensive experience auditing inpatient records from Level I Trauma Centers
Proficient in 3M CAC / encoder tools
Strong command of ICD-10-CM / PCS , MS-DRG , and APR-DRG methodologies
Ability to interpret audit findings, identify systemic issues, and communicate results effectively
Demonstrated success managing high-volume audit workloads with precision
Skilled in initiating and resolving clinical documentation queries
Experience with one or more major EHR systems — Meditech preferred, with experience in Epic or McKesson also valuable
