The University of Texas at San Antonio is a nationally recognized, top-tier public research university. The Contract Negotiator / Technology and Intellectual Property Management Specialist manages the workflow and maintenance of draft and executed agreements on behalf of the department.
Job Summary
The role manages UT San Antonio's intellectual property database, including maintaining filings, deadlines, and activities. This position also reviews use of patent expense budget funds, evaluates unlicensed patents prior to maintenance fee authorizations, and ensures patent budget resources are used effectively.
Core Responsibilities
- Responsible for maintaining files and tracking data for department-managed agreements, intellectual property, including copyrights, patents, trademarks.
- Receives initial technology disclosures and ensures completeness of the required information from the creators.
- Supports departmental workflow and efficiency through identification and configuration of technology management solutions.
- Fulfills reporting requirements of state- and federally-funded technologies.
- Populates, organizes, monitors, and maintains the technology solutions for all IP.
- Supports the management decision-making of the OCI Director and the Chief Commercialization Officer by providing data to support the preparation of OCI's internal and external reporting and planning requirements.
- Captures, tracks, and communicates approved outside counsel communications.
- Coordinates the timely execution of legal documents for IP matters with United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Copyright Office and external legal counsel.
- Reviews outside counsel invoices to ensure compliance with UT Office of General Counsel (OGC) policies.
- Prepares invoices and tracks revenue received from licensees.
- Conducts preliminary review and negotiation of Material Transfer Agreements (MTA) and Confidentiality Disclosure Agreements (CDA) for relevant intellectual property.
- Updates and reviews data for accuracy and integrity.
- Assists and acts as backup to administrative staff for office administration.
- Promotes safety and environmental protection by working in a safe manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or business.Minimum of 4 years of direct experience in research, technology development and / or business analysis.Knowledge of intellectual property development, patent, copyright and trademark law, and business incubation.Ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Ability to meet deadlines, define, prioritize, and direct own activities to meet critical objectives.Ability to converse on scientific and technical matters in a variety of disciplines.Ability to problem solve, work with details and excellent decision-making skills.Excellent oral and written communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and ability to learn and use institutional software systems.Working Conditions
Office environment.Occasional evening and weekend work.Computer and standard office equipment.Physical Demands
Sedentary work; sitting most of the time.Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.This position will work primarily on the UT San Antonio Greehey Medical Center campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
