Overview

The Director of Workers’ Compensation Claims is responsible for the strategic oversight and day-to-day administration of the organization’s workers’ compensation claims program. This leadership role ensures claims are handled efficiently, compliantly, and with a focus on cost containment, employee care, and continuous improvement. The director partners with third-party administrators (TPAs), legal counsel, vendors, and internal teams to drive best-in-class outcomes across all jurisdictions.

Key Responsibilities Strategic Oversight & Program Management

  • Lead the national workers' compensation claims program, overseeing all internal and external claim handling activities.
  • Design and implement best practices, policies, and procedures to ensure efficient claims management and regulatory compliance.
  • Continuously assess the effectiveness of claim processes and drive program improvements through data analysis and stakeholder feedback.
  • Monitor changes in federal and state workers’ compensation laws and ensure timely program updates.

Stakeholder & Vendor Relationship Management

  • Manage and evaluate performance of external partners, including TPAs, legal firms, medical management vendors, and investigative services.
  • Build collaborative partnerships with business unit leaders, HR, legal, finance, and safety teams to improve claim outcomes.
  • Represent the company in high-level discussions with insurance carriers, actuaries, and regulatory bodies.
  • Claims Oversight & Cost Control

  • Oversee large loss claims and complex litigation, ensuring appropriate reserves and resolution strategies are in place.
  • Develop and implement strategies to reduce claim duration, improve return-to-work outcomes, and control claim costs.
  • Analyze claims data trends and lead cost containment initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain dashboards and reporting tools for leadership visibility.
  • Leadership & Team Development

  • Direct and mentor a team of workers’ compensation professionals, including claims managers and analysts.
  • Set performance expectations, coach team members, and promote professional development.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, integrity, and customer service.
  • Communication & Reporting

  • Prepare and deliver presentations to internal stakeholders, including senior executives.
  • Provide regular updates on claims performance, emerging risks, and program KPIs.
  • Create educational content and lead training on claims best practices across the organization.
  • Qualifications Education

    Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, Insurance, or related field required.

    Professional designations such as Associate in Claims (AIC), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), or similar certifications preferred.

    Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in worker's compensation liability programs and claims management in multi-state jurisdictions.
  • Proven track record in managing complex claims in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Prior experience with Third-Party Administrators (TPAs) and legal vendors strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership in team management and cross-functional collaboration.
