Job Summary
The Per Diem Speech Pathologist provides evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for pediatric through geriatric patients within the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Reporting to the Chief Speech Pathologist, this role manages a range of conditions, including augmentative communication needs, developmental speech and language disorders, cognitive-communication disorders, fluency and voice disorders, dysphagia, aphasia, apraxia, and dysarthria.
This position operates with a high degree of clinical autonomy, collaborating with physicians, therapy teams, educational specialists, and external service providers. Responsibilities also include patient education, interdisciplinary consultation, care coordination, and management of insurance authorizations.

- California Licensed Speech Pathologist
- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
- American Heart Association BLS or American Red Cross BLS, or a UC Davis Health CPR certification
- Must possess a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology
- Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience working with adults as a Licensed Speech Pathologist
- Thorough knowledge of appropriate assessment instruments, test administration procedures, scoring, and interpretation
- Ability to extract pertinent information to relate to the patient and / or family members
- Knowledge of how patients should be responding to treatment, average length of stay in treatment, recognition of appropriate versus inappropriate treatment for each patient
- Ability to establish programs based on testing results appropriate for each patient
- Ability to recognize the need for program modification
- Ability to extract pertinent behaviors and incorporate these into daily written progress notes
- Knowledge of various home programs and organization into individual programs for family implementation
- Ability to report to the referring physician regarding patient diagnosis, skills, and prognosis using appropriate terminology and information
- Ability to extract pertinent information to relate to family members, be empathetic, and supportive
- Ability to maintain patient records and process necessary billing forms and treatment authorizations in a prompt, accurate manner
- Ability to maintain an accurate schedule and personal workload accounts
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions given by the section chief, including attendance at weekly meetings
- Knowledge of current therapeutic and evaluative instruments
- Ability to assume responsibility for other therapists' patients on short notice
- Ability to communicate effectively with other therapists
- Ability to provide instruction and supervision, as required, for student interns and medical students
- Knowledge of community resources
Preferred Qualifications
A m inimum of 1 year of experience working with the adult population in inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing (SNF), acute care, or a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH)Experience with treating patients with cognitive dysphagia, dysarthria, and aphasiaExperience with bedside swallow assessment or instrumented swallow assessments (FEES or MBSS)Key Responsibilities

The primary purpose of the Joint Venture Rehabilitation Hospital is to provide a full range of rehabilitation services designed to restore patients to their optimal functional capacity. The hospital is a 52-bed rehabilitation hospital on the Sacramento Medical Center campus. It is equipped with leading-edge amenities and adaptive units where patients can practice typical activities of daily living. The R ehabilitation H ospital also includes a 12-bed brain injury unit and four private rooms for bariatric patients.
